Dublin Castle – Closure of State Apartments in preparation for Ireland’s upcoming Presidency of the Council of the European Union.

In order to finalise preparations for Ireland’s hosting of the Presidency, the State Apartments at Dublin Castle will be closed to the public from Tuesday 5 May.

Dublin Castle will be the primary State venue for events during Ireland’s forthcoming Presidency of the EU with more than one hundred events taking place including conferences, meetings, dinners, cultural events and receptions.

The wider Dublin Castle campus will remain accessible to the public for a further period, including the Chester Beatty Library, the Dubh Linn gardens and the census exhibition in the Coach House Gallery. It is advised to check our websites and social media channels for updates on access arrangements at Dublin Castle during May and June 2026.

From mid-June 2026 for the six-month duration of the Presidency, the Dublin Castle campus will close the public in its entirety. There will be no public access, in particular, there will be no through access from Dame Street (Palace Street Gate) to Ship Street for the duration.

We look forward to welcoming visitors back to Dublin Castle in January 2027.

Today, we held our final Origami Session of the year in the Education Room of Dublin Castle! We spent the afternoon creasing, folding and assembling various types of paper to create elegant origami models directed by the talented !

We followed up the session with a tour of the State Apartments taking in details like the handpainted presidential seals to the zodiac signs of the Apollo ceiling and the star shaped badge of the Order of Saint Patrick.

Thanks to David, Kasia and Victor for joining us today at Dublin Castle!

IRELAND'S EIGHTH PRESIDENCY OF THE COUNCIL OF THE EUROPEAN UNION!

From July to December 2026, Ireland will hold the Presidency of the Council of the European Union – a central leadership role at the heart of EU decision-making.

This will be the eighth time Ireland has held the rotating Presidency – a responsibility that reflects our enduring commitment to partnership, cooperation and progress in Europe. Ireland last held the role in 2013, and previously in 1975, 1979, 1984, 1990, 1996 and 2004.

For six months, Ireland will guide negotiations, broker agreement between Member States, and help deliver EU laws and policies that affect the daily lives of more than 450 million people.  Throughout this six-month period, Ireland will lead the EU’s policy agenda, driving discussions on key legislative and policy matters. Irish ministers and officials will chair a majority of the Council of Ministers’ meetings and represent the Council in its dealings with other EU institutions, including the European Parliament.

Many of these high-level meetings will take place around Dublin's city centre in key venues such as Farmleigh House & Estate, Iveagh House (Department of Foreign Affairs), Government Buildings and Dublin Castle.

Photos from today’s Wellness Through Origami session, held in the Education Room at Dublin Castle!

During the session, participants were guided in creating origami hearts, tulips, wildflowers and stems inspired by the grisaille painting "Venus" (1786) by Peter De Gree.

Following a period of observation, discussion, and interpretation of this painting, participants produced their own individual origami models and cards to take home.

Thank you to everyone who joined us for Wellness Through Origami at Dublin Castle!

Here are some photos of the wonderful Daragh delivering all things deathly on his Specialised Art Tour this afternoon.

During this "death" themed tour, we explored funerary urns, blood-thirsty maenads, horrible punishments for Vestal Virgins, severed heads as political statements, slow executions, skulls, bones and painterly depictions of memento mori!

A big thank you to Daragh for another engaging take on the art collection of the State Apartments!

We look forward to doing it all again in 2027!
