A Symposium in Honour of Dr Deirdre McMahon
Saturday 31 October 2026
The Long Room Hub, Trinity College Dublin

Deirdre taught History at MIC from 1995 until her retirement in 2017. She passed away in February 2026. This event brings together Deirdre’s friends and colleagues to deliver papers on recent research on themes and topics that related to her own scholarship - including Irish foreign affairs, Anglo-Irish relations, empire, Commonwealth, and archives. It also provides an opportunity to remember and reflect on Deirdre's seminal contributions as a historian, researcher, and teacher.

This event is kindly sponsored by the Faculty of Arts, MIC, and the Long Room Hub, Trinity College Dublin.

Master’s student Sydney Patterson brought history to life and facilitated learning for secondary students studying the Downing Street Declaration via a workbook she created using Pembroke College Oxford’s Quill Project, an online platform for researchers, students, teachers and those analysing the records of negotiated texts.

Sources for the workbook content were taken from the Downing Street Declaration material in the Dermot Nally Collection, which is housed in UCD Archives. Sydney explains the process and the use of Quill Project tools to create this digital learning resource in the latest UCD Library Cultural Heritage Collections blog post.
