Reeling in the Years | 20th Year in the Seanad | President of Ireland Comes to Kenmare - (Continued)

After years of campaigning, Peninsula Park & Cumann na mBan Park in Kenmare were secured as the first two parks in the town in public ownership . After my invitation, Peninsula Park was officially opened by President Michael D Higgins & Sabina Higgins officially opened Cumann na mBan Parc in honour of the women of our greatest generation who struggled for our independence.
My mother & our neighbour Patricia O’Sullivans worked together to eventually ensure the land by Cromwells bridge came into public ownership

Reeling in the Years | 20 Years in the Seanad
2010–2014

Securing the new Kenmare Community Hospital was the result of years of determination and persistence. A crucial Letter of Acceptance from the HSE in 2010 ensured the project was legally obliged to proceed despite difficult financial circumstances. After a long campaign, the new hospital was officially opened in 2014. It was a significant achievement for the people of Kenmare and South Kerry, securing modern healthcare facilities for generations to come.

Reeling in the Years | 20th Year in the Seanad

This year is the centenary of Amhrán na bhFiann being adopted as Ireland’s National Anthem.
I’ll be on RTÉ Radio 1 DriveTime to talk about the Seanad Public Consultation Report on our national anthem which I was in charge of compiling in 2018

As part of that consultation, we also successfully advocated for the interpretation and performance of our National Anthem in Irish Sign Language (ISL) for our deaf community.
Since then, the ISL version has been performed and broadcast at major sporting and national events, helping to make this important symbol of our nation more inclusive and accessible.

The Seanad public consultation also drafted National Anthem Protocol’s www.senatormarkdaly.ie/uploads/1/3/5/6/135670409/seanad-public-consultation-report-on-the-national-anthem.pdf

As we mark this significant centenary, it is an opportunity to reflect on the enduring importance of our National Anthem and to ensure it continues to be respected, celebrated, and passed on to future generations.

In 2017 Following the Brexit referendum, I published the first report by a Joint Committee of the Dail & Senate on Uniting Ireland “Brexit & the Future of Ireland: Uniting Ireland & its People in Peace & Prosperity”. www.senatormarkdaly.ie/uniting-ireland-brexit—the-future-of-ireland.html

The film brings together voices from Unionist, Loyalist, Republican and Nationalist communities, alongside former Taoisigh Bertie Ahern and Leo Varadkar, former British Prime Minister John Major and US President Bill Clinton.

As I say in the :

“What we do in the next ten years will decide the next century on this island.”

Reeling in the Years | ahead of my 20th Year in the Seanad
2007 – honoured to have been elected to Seanad Éireann for the first time in 2007 as one of its youngest members. Having never previously contested an election, it was an incredible privilege to earn the support of the electorate. That election marked the beginning of a journey in public service that has now spanned almost two decades. I remain deeply grateful for the opportunity to serve.
