Over the last two years, an average of four people a day have entered homelessness.

The latest figures show 17,548 people were living in emergency accommodation in April, including 5,604 children.

Headlines stating that 'rents rise' make it sound as though rents are increasing automatically, in a vacuum.

The reality is that there are people behind the decisions to keep raising rents. More accurate headlines and debates in the Dรกil would be 'landlords raise rents to highest ever levels'.

Why are large landlords exempt from playing their part in ending the homeless crisis when they are a direct cause of rising numbers?

While the overall numbers have increased, we welcome the decrease in homelessness among single households as well as those who are over 65. These are two cohorts of people experiencing homelessness SCI have been advocating for.

Thank you to Fianna Fรกil for inviting Simon Communities of Ireland to exhibit at their Ard Fhรฉis on Saturday.

We are grateful to the Taoiseach, Ministers, and Ministers of State who took the time to speak with our team ๐Ÿ’ฌ

How high must the numbers climb before we acknowledge that we have reached a crisis point?

Itโ€™s unconscionable to think that 17,517 people are living in emergency accommodation in Ireland in 2026.

These latest figures mark a staggering increase of 2,099 in emergency accommodation since March 2025.

Each month we see the numbers increase and unfortunately there are still no signs of them reversing.

The record numbers of people without housing demand an urgent, crisis-level response.

We need to see action on prevention and coordinated action across the entire government. This cannot be left to a single department.

We have published our first Locked Out of the Market report of 2026 ๐Ÿ”‘

These reports continue to show that the private rental sector remains out of reach for far too many people and the Simon Communities across the country are seeing the consequences every day.

For the second report in a row there were no HAP properties available in 10 of the 16 areas studied ๐Ÿšซ

While changes such as minimum six-year tenancies and limits on rent increases may provide greater stability for some renters, they fail to address the core issue โ€“ affordability, particularly for households relying on HAP ๐Ÿ

HAP is imperfect and we are far too reliant on the private rental sector as a key piece of our homeless solutions.

Without an immediate adjustment that reflects real market rents, the private rental sector will continue to be a primary driver of homelessness.

Submissions are a hugely important part of the advocacy work of Simon Communities of Ireland.

Recently, we submitted 43 recommendations to the Government on their Homeless Prevention Framework. These recommendations were put together collaboratively between SCI and the local Simon Communities across Ireland.

On Friday, we hosted a live reaction to the monthly homeless figures where we invited local representatives to join us as we highlighted the voices of people with lived experience.

Our Research Lead, Kenny Ogunjemilusi, presented case studies from the problem phase of the COMHOM project in Ireland. Her presentation focused on individuals with lived experience of homelessness and explored each of their pathways into homelessness, highlighting the voices and stories behind the figures.
