An Open Day will be held on 11 April at Inis Óirr Lighthouse as part of the ongoing collaboration between Irish Lights and Údarás na Gaeltachta to support community‑led lighthouse development. The event forms an early step in the shared ambition to see complementary opportunities that support community and rural development being developed using the practical guide From Vision to Operation: A Practical Guide to Community‑Led Lighthouse Development. This guide developed by Údarás na Gaeltachta with input from Irish Lights provides a structured pathway for communities to explore opportunities and complimentary uses for lighthouse sites in Gaeltacht areas.

A new donation to the Irish Lights Archive highlights the legacy of Commissioner Thomas George Wilson (1938-1969), offering a fascinating glimpse into the history of Ireland’s lighthouse service.

The collection includes rare photographs, documents, and stories connected to iconic projects such as the Kish Lighthouse and the vessel Granuaile II.

Among the most remarkable items are photo albums and slides from Wilson’s lighthouse inspection tours around the coast of Ireland, as well as drafts, photographs, and original ink drawings related to his 1967 publication The Irish Lighthouse Service. The book was written to commemorate the 100th anniversary of Irish Lights and remains one of the first comprehensive and reliable studies of the organisation since its founding.

This donation provides valuable insight into Ireland’s maritime heritage and the work of Irish Lights.
