Corpus Christi
Thursday, 4 June 2026
Corpus Christi is a Christian feast celebrating the Real Presence of Jesus Christ in the Eucharist—the belief that Christ is truly present in the consecrated bread and wine received at Holy Communion.
In old Ireland, the feast was marked by beautiful parish processions honouring the Blessed Sacrament. Children dressed in their First Communion clothes would scatter flower petals along the route, while families decorated their homes, gates, and roadside altars with wildflowers and greenery.
The procession often stopped at outdoor altars for prayers, hymns, and Benediction. In rural communities, the feast was also a time to pray for good weather, healthy crops, livestock, and a successful harvest.
Many villages treated Corpus Christi as one of the most important days of the year, with entire communities gathering to take part. Although less common today, these traditions remain a treasured part of Ireland's religious and cultural heritage.
