Although May Day is an important occasion for recognising progress in labour rights within Ireland and worldwide, CATU Louth understands that the fight does not begin or end on a single day. People must continually and collectively stand up for rights at work and in other facets of life, gradually working towards a better, fairer society for current and future generations. Our member moved into a Tuath housing unit in Riverside Court, Drogheda with her daughter in 2024. Since moving in she had to deal with a number of maintenance issues, repeated instances of antisocial behaviour in her building and a dangerously substandard fire safety system. As a result she no longer feels safe in the building and she and her daughter have been forced into homelessness for months.

After tirelessly advocating for herself and her daughter, Tuath's response was to attempt to transfer them to Dundalk, away from her daughter's school and their local community/support network. Join us in demanding that our member and her daughter have a safe, secure home in their community.

It was a busy weekend for our branch as we marked the end of the European Action Coalition Housing Action Days for 2026

As well as hosting our first ever housing support group and community pollution forum in Blackrock members travelled to Belfast to take take part in the Anti Airbnb Walking Tour hosted by in collaboration with Conradh na Gaeilge and BDS Belfast (we particularly enjoyed the connection to Omeath).

And in Dublin, members from Louth travelled to support tenants affected by the cruel rent hikes imposed by Dublin City Council at the Drop the Rent Hikes march organised by CATU Dublin branches.

🚨MEMBER DEFENSE NEWS, PLEASE SHARE🚨

Unlivable and unsafe conditions in Riverside Court, Drogheda, a property leased by Tuath Housing, have left our member and her daughter homeless.

We will not allow our demands to be pushed aside.

Now they want to relocate her away from her home town, friends, family and support network. Is this a solution or is it punishment?

We believe it is within the power of Louth County Council to house our member in Drogheda.

Big weekend across our union

CATU branches will be taking part in the European Action Coalition for the Right to Housing and to the City Housing Action Days

CATU Galway started the week off right with their action on homelessness assessment at Galway City Council, and we've events across the county heading into the weekend: from film screenings to walking tours to the Dublin demo against DCC rent hikes!
