This is a lovely little story, with global experts making their own tiles at Mellifont Old Mellifont Abbey for Heritage Week 2025.

Good morning from Old Mellifont Abbey. One of our most popular events for Heritage Week is our Paint Your Own Medieval Mellifont Tile Event. Excavations in the 1950s found exquisite floor tiles throughout the Cloister. Each year we make copies of these tiles and invite visitors to decorate a tile which they can keep. We were very lucky on the final Sunday to be visited by Professor Roger Stalley and his guests Charles and Nancy Little. Professor Stalley, Fellow Emeritus History of Art, Trinity College, author of many books and papers on Medieval Art and Architecture including "The Cistercian Monasteries of Ireland" . His guest, Charles Little, formerly curator of medieval art at the Metropolitan Museum in New York is considered on of the world's experts on Medieval Art. So delighted that they took time to spend a sunny afternoon at our lovely site to discover the beautiful carvings which have survived for almost a millennia. 📷Maeve

Preserving, protecting and reimagining our built heritage. The Seán Corcoran Series is supported by the Irish Walled Towns Network (a programme of The Heritage Council) and the Heritage Office of Louth County Council.

🏘️The Irish Town's Survival

Presented in association with our friends at the Irish Architectural Archive and funded by the Heritage Council through their Irish Walled Towns Network - Historian Dónal Fallon returns to the atmospheric surroundings of Highlanes Gallery for this intimate 'In Conversation' with one of Ireland’s foremost conservation architects, Gráinne Shaffrey.

Shaffrey Architects have undertaken the restoration of some of Ireland’s most inconic buildings including the Goethe-Institut on Dublin’s Merrion Sq and 14 Henrietta Street, Dublin – often referred to as the ‘tenement museum’.
They have more recently led the public consultation process on the restoration plans for Drogheda’s Westgate House.

On the 50th anniversary of the publication of her father Patrick Shaffrey’s seminal text The Irish Town – An Approach to Survival, Gráinne will reflect on its original thesis and what important information it might hold for us today in finding a clear and hopeful path forward, out of dereliction and decay, towards the restoration of Ireland’s precious built heritage in towns like Drogheda, and across the island of Ireland.

Tickets are very limited for this event which will be recorded live for Dónal Fallon's The Castles Burning podcast 🎙️
