As National Biodiversity Week draws to a close we introduce to you the Hairy Shieldbug (Dolycoris baccarum.)

Shieldbugs are members of the Order Hemiptera, which includes aphids and planthoppers.

They are classified as ‘true bugs’ and there are 18 species recognised here in Ireland.

The National Biodiversity Data Centre wishes to know more about them as their distributions are still poorly understood.
Their presence is indicative of a healthy surrounding biodiversity.

This Hairy Shieldbug was spotted recently on the leaves of Centaurea montana in our herbaceous border.

Allium siculum, previously known as Nectaroscordum siculum (Sicilian honey garlic) is a more unusual form of allium or ornamental onion.

This perennial bulb, native to Italy and France bears large, nodding umbels of creamy coloured flowers flushed with pink and green.

It is full hardy and thrives in full sun. It has been designated a “plant for pollinators” by the RHS.

It is in full bloom now in our herbaceous border here at Powerscourt.

As part of National Biodiversity Week, Rosemary will host a biodiversity talk and walk on Saturday 23rd May starting at 11am. Book your ticket on our website or via the link in our insta bio.

The Speckled Wood butterfly. (Pararge aegeria) can be found in its habitat of woodland areas, hedgerows and fields.

This Speckled Wood was spotted in our herbaceous border recently.

This particular butterfly like many others is in moderate decline over the past number of years.

The No-Mow policy helps its survival. Reduced mowing of long wild grasses provides shelter and enables it to feed and breed.

The food plant (FP) of its caterpillars includes Couch and Meadow grasses.
