We need to take Clonmacnoise back.

One of Ireland’s most important heritage sites sits in County Offaly — yet much of the tourism branding links it to Athlone and Westmeath instead.

Now, major tourism projects planned for this area in Offaly is being moved across the county boundary.

At the same time, there are plans for large wind turbines along the ancient routes leading to Clonmacnoise, here in Lemanaghan.

Clonmacnoise is not just a stop from Athlone — it is central to Offaly’s identity and heritage.

Offaly must protect and promote its own heritage before it becomes part of someone else’s tourism story.

Clonmacnoise belongs to Offaly. This tourism project was intrinsically linked and designed for the boglands near Clonmacnoise.

We need to protect the pilgrim paths, boglands, heritage and tourism industry of Offaly for future generations.

BREAKING: A major new visitor experience planned for Offaly is set to be relocated to a site in Athlone.

🚨 LOOK AT THIS MAP 🚨
Every marker represents an existing or proposed wind farm in Ireland- and this isn't even the full picture... 🤯

⚠️ In 2019, draft Wind Energy Development Guidelines were published which included stronger noise protections for communities, which would have been consistent with the WHO Environmental Noise Guidelines.(2018)

⚠️ In 2021, Eamon Ryan wrote to Darragh O'Brien seeking a move away from that approach after a Government-commissioned spatial study found that WHO 2018 would significantly reduce the amount of land available for wind farm development - making 2030 onshore wind targets impossible to achieve.

The guidelines were reopened.

Then, in March this year, Micheál Martin stated that publishing the long-awaited guidelines would restrict onshore wind development.

That tells you everything.

❓❓ So the HEALTH of rural Ireland is expected to be sacrificed in order to meet a 2030 onshore wind target?

Really?

Look at this map again.

If Micheál Martin and Darragh O'Brien get their way, this is only the beginning.

☘️ The Ireland we know today could be transformed into an industrial energy landscape within a generation.

⛔ Rural communities should not be sacrificed to facilitate an endless rollout of wind farms across Ireland.

Slí Mór Pilgrim Path, Lemanaghan Bog

A quiet stretch of the ancient Slí Mór Pilgrim Path, winding through the heart of Lemanaghan Bog. For centuries, pilgrims, monks and travellers crossed this landscape, following stone pathways through the boglands. Today, the path remains a powerful reminder of our rich heritage, connecting us to the people, stories and traditions that shaped this unique place. The preservation of this historic route is vital for future generations.
