It has been an exceptionally busy week for ambulance services and hospitals across the region, with crews working tirelessly to respond to those in need.

One of our crews managed to grab a quick photo of two National Ambulance Service (NAS) units from Swords and Finglas alongside Dublin Fire Brigade and Dublin Airport Fire and Rescue Service while at Beaumont Hospital.

All three services regularly respond to life-threatening emergencies and major incidents, often working side by side in challenging circumstances. The professionalism, teamwork and mutual support between crews is second to none and plays a vital role in delivering the best possible care to patients.

A great example of different emergency services coming together with one common goal.

While the public often only sees the flashing blue lights, behind every response is a huge amount of coordination, teamwork and dedication from crews across multiple services.

One of our crews managed to grab a quick photo during the week between calls.

One of the strange parts of this job is that you genuinely never know where you’ll end up during a shift — from busy city streets to some incredible views across the country, sometimes all in the same day.

There’s not always time to stop and appreciate it, but every now and again a crew gets a brief moment to take it in before heading on to the next call.

Crews from across the North East recently took part in an integrated training and education day in Our Lady of Lourdes Hospital alongside our healthcare colleagues.

The day gave staff an opportunity to demonstrate some of the specialist skills and capabilities within the National Ambulance Service, including our decontamination procedures and equipment, while also strengthening the close working relationships between pre-hospital and hospital teams.

These training days are an important part of ensuring agencies can work seamlessly together during complex incidents and major emergencies while allowing staff to share knowledge and experience across services.

A big thank you to all involved in organising and taking part in the day.

This is Deirdre Tuite, a Dublin mum who decided to retrain as a paramedic after her son was rescued from a Wicklow mountain with a bad leg injury.

Deidre is newly qualified after deciding to retrain in her late 40s - the former educator and mum-of-four had always wanted to be a paramedic and decided the timing was right after her kids got older and her husband moved into office work.

There were two things in particular that inspired Deidre's interest in being a paramedic. She had cared for her mother for a long time, who was often ill due to suffering from COPD, and Deidre was always fascinated by how quickly paramedics were able to help.

Paramedics had also saved her son, Conor, from a scary situation when he was seven years old and slipped and fell, sustaining a bad leg injury that saw the mother and her son airlifted off a mountain by the coastguard.

"Seeing how good they were with Conor, and how the whole system worked together, was just amazing. I knew it was for me," she said.

Deirdre's career change is so inspiring that her daughter Rebecca has followed in her footsteps. She is currently in her second year of training. She had been doing biomedical science in college, but she switched courses after realising she was drawn more to people than lab work.

The mother-daughter duo have even worked a few shifts together, which the patients love. In fact, all of Deirdre's children noticed a change in her as soon as she started her training.

Deirdre finds that humour and distraction are some of the best medicines: "I always have a laugh with my patients. I think it's the best job in the world. We are so privileged and lucky to do it. When we knock on the door, people are so grateful to see us. Not every job is like that."

Fuel protests continue to pop up across the region and, while we know the vast majority of protestors mean well, full road closures are starting to have a real impact on emergency services getting where they need to be 🚑

A gentle reminder that ambulances don’t have a “pause” button. When a call comes in, someone is having one of the worst days of their life and minutes really do matter.

If you’re out protesting, please keep emergency access routes clear and allow vehicles through whenever possible. We promise we’re not trying to skip the traffic — we’d much rather not be using the extra fuel on long detours either 😅

We’re asking everyone to help keep key routes clear for emergency services.

Our ambulance crews are now encountering delays passing through fuel protests on major roads. Every minute matters when someone is seriously ill or injured, and blocked routes can make it harder for us to reach patients and hospitals as quickly as possible.

We fully respect people’s right to protest, but we’re asking that clear access is always maintained for emergency vehicles responding to 999/112 calls.

A little space on the road can make a life-saving difference. 💚

We’re asking everyone to please ensure that all routes to and from medical facilities across Dublin are kept clear at all times.

Ambulances from National Ambulance Service Finglas — along with our colleagues across the city — need safe, unobstructed access to hospitals, emergency departments, community clinics, and patients’ homes.

Whether someone is attending a routine appointment, undergoing treatment, or experiencing a life-threatening emergency, this is a vulnerable and stressful time for them and their families. Delays caused by blocked roads or restricted access can have very real consequences.

If you’re travelling through the city, please be mindful of:
🚑 Hospital approach roads
🚑 Emergency department entrances
🚑 Ambulance access points
🚑 Key routes used by emergency services

Keeping these routes clear helps ensure that care is never delayed — and we’d really appreciate not having to burn extra diesel trying to reroute a 5-tonne ambulance through a maze of side streets 😅
