We explored themes of memory, time and place, home and engaged with the urban and coastal landscape of Galway City where we live and walk through on a daily basis in response to As It Darkens a solo exhibition by James Wellwood, as part of Galway International Arts Festival ‘26. Working with water mixable oil paint, painting techniques and sculptural processes to make our own plaster cast snails we painted with watercolour paint, familiar locations are reimagined through paint and new perspectives considering how place is encountered as we walk through our cities. Paint, Sketch & Walk Teen Summer Art Camp ‘26. Well done !

Join us for an artist talk with James Wellwood and Laura Fitzgerald who has written a short story, The Pale Deer, to accompany the exhibition.

When: Thursday 16 July
Time : 2pm

Exploring themes of memory, transience, and place, the exhibition draws on Wellwood’s ongoing engagement with the rural landscape of the Kilkenny dairy farm where he grew up. Working across painting and sculptural processes, familiar locations are reimagined through the shifting perspectives of childhood, adolescence, and adulthood, considering how place is encountered both physically and psychologically.

This event is an opportunity to engage with James Wellwood’s paintings and sculptural works together with Laura Fitzgerald’s stunning short story.

No booking required.
Complimentary refreshments provided
All Welcome !

Laura Fitzgerald is an artist who creates woven narratives of personal and political reflection in video, drawing, and text, often referencing the artist’s own rural background and general anxieties of international artistic professionalism.

Engage Art Studios is delighted to present, As It Darkens,a solo exhibition by James Wellwood, as part of Galway International Arts Festival ‘26 curated by Mark O’Gorman, inaugural curator and producer of visual art at The Complex, Dublin. The exhibition is accompanied by a text from Irish artist Laura Fitzgerald , an artist who creates woven narratives of personal and political reflection in video, drawing, and text, often referencing the artist’s own rural background.

James Wellwood’s painting practice approaches each body of work as a site-responsive, project-based visual diary, grounded in an engagement with places of personal significance. Landscapes and environments that carry emotional weight or formative influence form the basis for exploring themes of nostalgia, memory, isolation, and spatial perception, considering how a place is experienced both physically and psychologically.

James Wellwood (b. 1999) is a Kilkenny-based artist. He graduated with a BA (Hons) in Fine Art (Painting) from Limerick School of Art and Design in 2024. Wellwood’s work documents everyday experiences and immediate surroundings, often transcribed from photographs taken on his phone. These images capture quiet, intimate moments that might otherwise go unnoticed. Through painting, these encounters are slowed down and reconsidered, allowing personal narratives to emerge within each composition.

Wellwood has exhibited nationally and internationally, including at The Hunt Museum and Ormston House, Limerick; Outset Gallery, Galway; GOMA, Waterford; and iP12 House, Chania, Crete.

Beautiful paintings in response to David Hockney’s recent exhibition, Some Very,Very,Very New Paintings Not Yet Shown In Paris at the Annely Juda Fine Art gallery, London by Thursday Art School and Saturday Art school (5-12 year olds). We made these paintings at the start of Spring. They love Hockney’s use of colour and his inverted perspective. Very cool.We are so sad to hear of his passing today. He is always going to be a wonderful inspiration for our art projects. RIP David Hockney.
