🚦 Galway City Council and Galway County Council have launched the Galway City and County Road Safety Strategy 2026-2030, setting ambitious targets to reduce road deaths and serious injuries by 50% by 2030.

The strategy outlines 50 actions focused on safer roads, improved infrastructure, speed management, education and enforcement, in line with the national Vision Zero approach.

Between 2021 and 2025, 51 people lost their lives and 360 people were seriously injured on roads across Galway. The new strategy aims to address these challenges through a coordinated approach involving local authorities, An Garda Síochána, the RSA and other key partners.

Road safety is a shared responsibility. By working together, we can create safer roads and streets for everyone who lives, works and travels in Galway.

Café Lates 2026 returns to Galway City! ☕

Looking for something different to do in the evening? From 6pm from August to December, Café Lates will bring a programme of workshops, DJ nights, spoken word events and creative experiences to cafés across Galway City.

Participating cafés:
• Plámás (Galway's Westend)
• 56 Central Restaurant (Shop Street)
• Fairhill Café (Abbeygate Street)
• Little Lane Coffee Company (Bonham Quay)
• Limited Coffee Co. (Woodquay)

Whether you're meeting friends, attending an event, or discovering a new favourite café, Café Lates offers more ways to experience Galway after 6pm.

The initiative responds to strong public demand for more of a café culture in the evening time and for more non-alcohol-focused evening options and is part of Galway's commitment to developing a more inclusive and sustainable Night-Time Economy. 💫

The Galway City Local Community Safety Partnership (LCSP) is developing a new Community Safety Plan for our city and we want to hear from you 🫵🏻

Residents, community groups, businesses, and local organisations are invited to take part in upcoming public consultations. Share your experiences, concerns, and ideas on safety, inclusion, wellbeing, public spaces, services, and future priorities.

Your voice will directly inform how we build a safer, more connected, and more inclusive Galway for everyone.

Galway City Council have issued a Prior Warning Notice for Ballyloughane & Grattan Road Beaches. ⚠️

These beaches are susceptible to Short Term Pollution events and are known to be affected by heavy rainfall.

To reduce the risk of illness, beach users should take the following precautions:
• Avoid swallowing or splashing water
• Wash your hands before handling food
• Avoid swimming with an open cut or wound
• Avoid swimming if you are pregnant or have a weakened immune system.
Higher levels of bacteria are usually short-lived and most bathers are unlikely to experience any illness.

Bathers are asked to observe precautions displayed on posters.
Updates expected on Wednesday, 2 September 2026 upon receipt of results. 📅

Galway City Council will begin the removal of fallen trees in Merlin Woods from 7 September 2026, with a Traffic Management Plan in place along the designated forestry route. 🌳

Site traffic will operate 10:00am–4:00pm ⏰
Works are expected to last up to 12 weeks, finishing around mid‑December.

The impact of the traffic plan will be monitored throughout; concerns can be sent to [email protected]. 📨

The Council will apply in September for NeighbourWood Scheme funding to support the long‑term future of Merlin Woods. If successful, this funding could deliver new trails, seating, picnic areas, a forest school, orienteering routes, and ensure replanting with native species.🍁🥬🧺

Community suggestions for amenities can be submitted to [email protected] by 11 September 2026.
