A historic moment for Galway City.

Cllr Helen Ogbu has been elected as the 72nd Mayor of the City of Galway at todayโ€™s City Council AGM, becoming the first person of migrant background to serve as First Citizen of the city.

In her address, Mayor Ogbu highlighted three key priorities for her term: belonging, young people, and community.

Congratulations also to Cllr Josie Forde on being elected Deputy Mayor.

Galway City Council have issued a Prior Warning Notice for Ballyloughane & Grattan Road Beaches. Bathers are advised of the possibility of an increase in the levels of bacteria in the bathing water over the coming days due to forecasted increased rainfall and possible activation of storm overflow.

To reduce the risk of illness, beach users should take the following precautions:
โ€ข Avoid swallowing or splashing water
โ€ข Wash your hands before handling food
โ€ข Avoid swimming with an open cut or wound
โ€ข Avoid swimming if you are pregnant or have a weakened immune system.

Higher levels of bacteria are usually short-lived and most bathers are unlikely to experience any illness.

Expected Duration: 20/06/2026 โ€“ 24/06/2026
Actions Taken/Proposed: Prior Warning Notices Erected at Beach.

Galway City Council held its May Council Plenary Meeting in the Michael D. Higgins Auditorium at the Aula Maxima, University of Galway, reflecting the strong and ongoing collaboration between the Council and the University.

This partnership continues to build on the foundations of the Poitiers Declaration signed in 2017, which formalised cooperation to support regional development and agree cooperation initiatives.
