RNLI, Galway Lifeboat Station

RNLI, Galway Lifeboat Station The RNLI Lifeboat Station at Galway was established in 1995 because of the increasing number of search and rescue incidents in the area.

Today the station operates an inshore B class Atlantic 85 lifeboat. At the Executive Committee Meeting held on 23 March 1994, it was resolved that an Atlantic Inshore lifeboat be established at Galway City because of the increasing number of search and rescue incidents in the area. Galway City is located on the north side of Galway Bay at the confluence of Lough Corrib with Galway Bay.

Altant

ic 21 class lifeboat placed on temporary station duty at Galway on 27 March. Temporary accommodation for the lifeboat and crew was provided. A new launching davit was also installed on the quay at this time. Following successful completion of the evaluation period, it was agreed that permanent facilities should be provided. Proposals were therefore drawn up for the construction of a new boathouse over the revetment adjacent to the launching davit. These proposals were subsequently approved and work commenced in February 1997 and completed in September 1997. New Atlantic 75 lifeboat B738 placed on service on 3 September.

Celebrating National Volunteering Week 2026 and 30 years of Galway RNLI volunteer crew!

Without our thousands of volunteers, the RNLI would be unable to save lives at sea. From lifeboat and shore crews to fundraisers and water safety volunteers, every single volunteer role helps the RNLI to continue its lifesaving work.

From all of us at Galway Lifeboat Station we extend our heartfelt condolences to our fellow search and rescue colleagues at Marine Rescue NSW, following the tragic incident in Ballina, Australia.

The loss of their two volunteers is felt on a global scale and is a sobering reminder of the immense danger search and rescue volunteers face every day at sea. We recognise the profound impact tragedies like this have on families, crews and communities. Our thoughts are with them all.

We honour the courage, commitment and selflessness of those involved, and of everyone who dedicates their lives to saving lives at sea. They will not be forgotten. Fair winds and following seas 💙

After 23 years as a volunteer with Galway RNLI, Olivia set out to sea for the last time on the lifeboat this weekend.

‘Thinking back over the hundreds of hours I’ve spent at sea on rescues, it is the people that I remember. All those people who we saved and the families whose loved ones we brought home. It has been a privilege for me to be part of Galway RNLI and to serve on the boat with the crews over the past 23 years.’

Thank you Olivia for being an amazing part of our crew and for your commitment to Galway Lifeboat.
