Young Fine Gael NUI Galway is an active political society here on campus. Why not join us and be part of one of the largest and most active branches in the country! Young Fine Gael (YFG) is the youth wing of the Fine Gael party and always welcomes new members aged between 15 and 30. YFG is the only vehicle for young people to seek political change in this country. As an autonomous youth organisati

on, it has the advantage of embodying the values of the Fine Gael Party, while maintaining the independence to express views of young people. Fine Gael first established a presence on this campus in 1973 at the time of the Liam Cosgrave-led Fine Gael/Labour Coalition government. The President and Leader of Fine Gael, Enda Kenny T.D., - then an Arts student at the University - was one of the founding members of the branch. Another founding member was Madelainne Taylor-Quinn, a former member of both Dail Eireann and Seanad Eireann. NUIG YFG is one of the largest and most active political movement on campus. Young Fine Gael meets regularly on campus and regularly attracts attendances of 35-40 people. Highlights of the academic year just (sadly!) ended included the many guest visits including local councillors and expert speakers as well as many social events! YFG is an organisation with a network of thousands of members nationwide, and an unrivalled programme of social events, weekends away and nights out. So as well as an opportunity to voice your opinion on the issues that matter to you, you get a packed social life into the bargain! So, what are you waiting for? Join YFG Today!

SUSI Grant News
* Extra payment of SUSI maintenance grant 16th December
* Reduction of €1,000 in student contribution fees

Delighted to receive confirmation from my colleague Minister Simon Harris TD
students receiving maintenance grants can expect an extra payment on December 16th. This will mean an additional €679 for some students on the maximum amount before the end of the year.

I know how difficult it is for families and students going to college this year. It is wonderful having a normal college experience again after the past couple of years however higher costs are causing huge worry.

Students who paid their 2022/23 student contribution in full for Free Fee courses will receive a refund from their third level college.

The HEI will begin contacting eligible students this week and seek the necessary account details to process a refund.

My colleague, Minister Simon Harris also made significant changes to eligibility for SUSI last year, the distance from college has reduced from 45 to 30 kilometres which meant more students eligible for the full grant as well as an increase to income threshold amounts.

If you want to apply for financial support this year, please submit an online application before 3rd November and families can easily find out if they are eligible by checking susi.ie. SUSI grants are available to students on approved PLC, undergrad and postgrad courses.

To further recognise the cost of living crisis people are facing, Minister Harris also announced a once off contribution of €1,000 towards the student contribution paid by each free fees eligible student in academic year 2022/23.
