It's hot out there! Please share our lifesaving advice to help us keep people safe 📢

With many enjoying the sun, we are asking you to remember one thing if you're by the water:

- Tilt your head back with your ears submerged

- Relax and try to breathe normally

- Move your hands and legs to help you stay afloat

- It’s OK if your legs sink, we all float differently

- Once your breathing is under control, call for help or swim to safety.

Enjoy and stay safe 🥵

🚨Latest Call out - Aran Islands RNLI respond to medical evacuation from Inis Meáin🚨

The Aran Islands lifeboat was tasked by Valentia Coast Guard on Thursday night (7 May) at 9:33pm for a medical evacuation from the neighbouring island of Inis Meáin.

The lifeboat launched from Cill Rónain harbour and made way to Inis Meáin. Once the lifeboat reached Inis Meáin, the crew received handover from the Public Health Nurse before the patient was transferred onboard.

The lifeboat departed Inis Meáin and safely transferred the patient to Ros a Mhíl and into the care of an awaiting ambulance crew.

The crew departed Ros a Mhíl and returned to Inis Mór at 11:20pm, washed down and ready for the next call.

Ó gach duine againn i stáisiún RNLI Oileáin Árann, cuirimid ár gcomhbhrón ó chroí in iúl dár gcomhghleacaithe cuardaigh agus tarrthála Marine Rescue NSW, i ndiaidh na tubaiste tragóidí i mBallina san hAstráil.

The loss of their two volunteers is felt on a global scale and is a sobering reminder of the immense danger search and rescue volunteers face every day at sea. We recognise the profound impact tragedies like this have on families, crews and communities. Our thoughts are with them all.

We honour the courage, commitment and selflessness of those involved, and of everyone who dedicates their lives to saving lives at sea.

Ní dhéanfar dearmad orthu 💙

🚨Aran Islands RNLI save life at sea 🚨

The Aran Islands RNLI were requested to launch by Valentia Coast Guard this afternoon at 4:46pm (3 May) after reports that a person had separated from friends, while exploring Straw Island and had failed to return.

The Aran Islands lifeboat launched from Kilronan Harbour and quickly arrived on scene, alongside Rescue 115, where a search operation around Straw Island began.

At 5:27pm, a crew member who was searching along the shoreline, spotted the casualty in the water approximately 700 metres from Straw Island. The lifeboat quickly made way to the casualty and were able to pull them from the water and onto the lifeboat.
Once onboard the crew assessed the casualty, and the decision was made to winch them from the lifeboat onto Rescue 115. The casualty was then airlifted to hospital for further examination.

Speaking following the call out, Aran Islands Coxswain Aonghus Ó hIarnáin said: ‘We would like to extend our very best wishes to the casualty and hope for a full and speedy recovery. We also commend the casualty's' friends who didn’t hesitate to call the Irish Coast Guard and raise the alarm.’

‘This marks our third call out in three days and we would like to recognise the dedication and commitment of our volunteers, who consistently respond when paged. We would also like to extend our thanks to Rescue 115 & Aran Fire and Rescue for their reliability, dedication, and teamwork today and every day.’

If you see somebody in trouble on the water or along the coast or think that they are in trouble, use marine VHF radio Ch 16 or dial 112 and ask for the Coast Guard.

🚨 Mayday on ‘Mayday’ as RNLI crews carry out rescue in Co Clare 🚨

Galway and Aran Islands RNLI crews were called into action yesterday evening (1 May) after a rigid inflatable boat (RIB) got into difficulty off Fanore, Co. Clare.

Volunteers were requested to launch by Valentia Coast Guard at approximately 8:30pm to investigate a report from a member of the public of a RIB in difficulty approximately 1km off the coast of Fanore Beach Co. Clare.

Weather conditions at the time were good, with a South Easterly Force 2 wind and a half metre swell.

The Aran Islands RNLI located the RIB at 9:15pm off the coast of Fanore. The crew observed that while the casualty was safe and well, they showed signs of exhaustion and exposure therefore was transferred onboard the All-weather lifeboat and given water and blankets to heat up.

The vessel was drifting into the main channel, creating a potential navigational hazard, so it was decided that the safest course of action was to establish a tow.

Once the Aran Islands All- weather lifeboat arrived into Ballyvaughan Bay, the RIB and casualty were handed over to the Galway inshore lifeboat to tow the vessel into Ballyvaughan Pier. Once the vessel and casualty were safely ashore both, Galway and Aran islands crews returned to base.

Speaking following the call out, Aran Islands Coxswain Ó hIarnáin said: ‘The member of the public did the right thing in raising the alarm as darkness was beginning to set in. We strongly advise boat owners to carry out essential pre‑launch checks, including the condition of the hull, engine, fuel system, steering, batteries, and onboard safety equipment such as fire extinguishers and communication devices.’

Yesterday’s rescue coincided with the start of the RNLI’s Mayday Mile appeal, where members of the public are asked to raise funds by completing a mile a day in May and help RNLI volunteers save lives this summer.

Peter Navan, who was on call as Launch Authority for the Galway Lifeboat Station for the first time this week said: ‘The Galway volunteer crew launched the lifeboat at 9.55pm and made way to Ballyvaughan arriving around 25 minutes later. Last night’s shout was a first for our new crew member, Leo Branagan, who recently transferred from Skerries RNLI and an opportunity to see how the flanking lifeboat stations work together to provide 24/7 search and rescue service on Galway Bay.’

He added: As a charity, this is only possible through the generous support from our community. This May we’re asking people to step up and support us through the Mayday Mile so we can keep saving lives when it matters most.’

Our crew came to the aid of three fishermen yesterday afternoon (Thursday 8 January) after their vessel got into difficulty southwest of Spiddal in Galway Bay.

Volunteers were requested to launch their all-weather lifeboat at 1.05pm to assess the situation where a trawler had got a net caught in its propellor, causing it to lose power.

Weather conditions at the time were good with a northerly force 3-4 wind and a half metre swell.

The lifeboat launched under Coxswain Declan Corrigan and with four crew members onboard and arrived on scene an hour later.

Once on scene, the crew observed that while the fishermen were safe and well, the vessel was drifting into the main channel. Due to the potential navigational hazard, it was decided that the safest course of action was to establish a tow and bring the vessel and its crew, to the nearest safe harbour at Rossaveel. Once the vessel was alongside, the lifeboat crew made their way home, arriving at 5.20pm.

Speaking following the call out, Coxswain Declan Corrigan said: ‘The fishermen did the right thing in raising the alarm when they knew they couldn’t make any safe onward progress and we were happy to assist as the tow was necessary to prevent any risk to navigation.

‘We would remind anyone planning a trip to sea to go prepared. Always wear a lifejacket or suitable flotation device for your activity, always carry a means of communication and should you get into difficulty or see someone else in trouble, call 999 or 112 and ask for the Coast Guard.’
