Inchagoill Island.

Inchagoill Island. Inchagoill Island,Lough Corrib,Co Galway,Ireland. Inchagoill Island is situated amongst the 365 - 377 Islands that comprise Lough Corrib in the West of Ireland.

The name translates to "Island of the Devout Stranger" (Inis na Ghaill) and is about 4 miles from Oughterard,Co Galway and Cong,Co Mayo. This enchanted island was once owned by Sir Benjamin Lee Guinness but now is owned by The Irish State/Coillte and all its monuments are protected and maintained by The Office of Public Works and Inland Fisheries Ireland. A leisurely walk around the island takes ab

out an hour to cover the 100 acres and one can see a wide variety of native Irish Oak,Ash,Birch,Willow,Yew and Pine trees growing in the serene and somewhat tropical in appearance landscape. Among its many ancient Romanesque ruins is "Tempall na Naoimh" and "St Patricks Church"."Tempall na Naoimh" or Tempall of the Saints is believed to have been built by The Augustinian Monks as a place of rest, relaxation and meditation. Just inside the doorway of "Tempall na Naoimh",on the righthand side, is a Byzantine Cross embedded in the stonework. This Key Cross was to be inspiration for the well known and popular "Celtic Cross".It is at least 200 years older than the church itself and is thought to have been brought to the island for safety. The altar in the church is at the eastern end because when Ireland was a pagan country, early Christians who were trying to convert these pagans, discovered that they worshipped the rising sun to the East. To this day baptisms and weddings are carried out in this lovely church. There is also a Tomb on the Island, believed to be that of Muirgheas O'Nioc, Archbishop of Tuam, who died there in 1128. Further along the pathway, one can find "The Stone of Lugnaedon" and "St Patricks Church".The 5th Century inscription on this standing stone translates into "The Standing Stone of Lugnaedon,Son of Liminueh".It is widely believed that Liminueh was the sister of St Patrick and that Lugnaedon ,her son and St Patricks nephew was also his navigator. It is also believed that Lugnaedon and St Patrick sought refuge in Inchagoill for 3 years in the 5th Century.Archeologists claim that the inscription on this stone is the oldest Latin Christian inscription found except for one other in The Catacombs of Rome. There is a magical and mystical beauty to this enchanted island and well worth a visit.Ferries travel to and from the island daily from Lisloughrey Pier,Cong,Co Mayo and from Oughterard Pier,Oughterard,Co Galway from May to October. Please scroll down the page to find a Direct Link to Booking on Corrib Cruises. Last Saturday was the first Saturday in six weekends when it was possible to get on Corrib without being blown down to Galway city. A really nice wave on the water and a steady breeze but very bright at times. Unfortunately there was little or no fly on the water and most boats I met had blanked. Even the trollers were not meeting fish however David (pictured below) had a total of three nice trout caught on a fly of his own making which he kindly gave to me afterwards. I fished the shallows hard and had one rise for my trouble. In fact the only thing I managed to hook was my own upper lip with a size 14 dry fly. The populace of Clifden could hear my shouts as I used my forceps to roll the barb loose!
Sunday the wind dropped to 3 or 4 Kilometres, at times to just flat calm, and the sky was very bright. There were good hatches of olives and quite a few anglers had great success with buzzers and dry olives. Anglers in a competition out of Ballindiff had some very nice fish to the net however approximately 12 anglers from Kilbeg managed just one fish. Our visiting friend David from Cork had 3 fish on Sunday and his good friend had two, all on buzzers.
Yesterday fishing was mixed even though there were some decent hatches and today was and still is extremely windy. There were a few boats out on Ballycurrin Bay today but I have no information on how they got on. One boat out of Annaghkeen returned early after blanking and being bounced up and down since 9.30 this morning. Having walked the shoreline I can tell you I could not see any evidence of fly hatching and no swallows or seagulls picking and at the time of writing the temperature has dropped making for a very chilly evening indeed. Winds tomorrow are forecast to be stronger again so if you are going on the lake make sure you have a nice big island at your back.
Until next time. Stay safe.

When Galway brothers David and Patrick Luskin bought a rare passenger boat in Inverness, they knew getting it home wouldn’t be simple. What followed was a multi‑stage odyssey by canal, sea and road.
