Stained-glass windows can be very beautiful, but they would originally have acted as an educational tool. A stained glass window is read like a book, but in a different order. You read upwards from the bottom left first, then the right-most panel, and last of all, from the bottom of the middle panel. The west window shows Patrick's life in 39 images, ordered in this way.
