Thanks to Cork County Council and a grant from Creative Ireland, mural artist Peter Martin has started work on his mural which will cover the walls of the reserve entrance and bridge. Peter won the open competition with his beautiful design depicting the four seasons on the reserve. When finished, it will bring great impact to the eye as you enter the reserve.

We held our first BioBlitz on the reserve on 21/22 May, the aim of which was to try to identify as many species of wildlife in a 24 hour period. This short video gives the final results. The weather was not kind to us but you will be surprised to find out the number of species we did manage to identify. Thanks to all those who made it possible.

Though we cannot always provide volunteer guides, we always welcome interested groups to the reserve. We had a busy week last week with visits from passengers from the ship National Geographic Explorer (above), masters students from the University of Brest (below) and an Educate Together secondary school in Cork. All had a great time and were very impressed with the reserve.

Robert, on the left in the core extraction video clip with reserve volunteer Allan Farrell, was a lead member of the Nobel Prize awarded Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) AR4 Working Group II. He was formerly Head of the School of Geography, Archaeology and Planning in UCC and is currently member of the Climate Change National Adaptation Committee. We are very lucky to have people like Robert giving generously of their time and expertise to further our understanding of the reserve and our environment.

Always great to see groups visiting the reserve. Last Wednesday we had a large group from the cruise ship National Geographic Explorer and on Saturday we had a group of students and lecturers from the University of Waterloo in Ontario, Canada. They were lucky with the weather and all were very impressed with the reserve.
