Window boxes fade by August for one reason: the plants were chosen for how they look in the nursery, not how they live together in a box through a full season. 🌿
These nine are matched on water needs, sun exposure, and visual contrast — which is what actually keeps a box full from spring through fall:
Full sun, warm season:
- Petunias and euphorbia — airy white euphorbia acts like a living cloud that makes every petunia color read brighter
- Marigold and lobelia — fiery orange marigolds with trailing deep blue lobelia, one of the strongest color contrasts in a single box
- Verbena and lantana — both bloom harder as temperatures rise; butterflies work them from June through September
- Zinnia and dusty miller — bold saturated zinnias against soft silver foliage all summer
- Million bells (calibrachoa) and sweet potato vine — cascading blooms over dramatic purple or lime foliage that gets more impressive each week
- Black-Eyed Susan vine and portulaca — drought-proof, sun-hardened, nearly zero maintenance in full heat
Shade and part-shade:
- Impatiens and creeping Jenny — reliable color with a lush golden-green cascade that stays full under a covered porch
Cool season (spring and fall):
- Snapdragon and nemesia — both handle spring frosts and reward early planting with layered color before heat arrives
- Pansy and English ivy — early spring or September box; rich color above a trailing ivy skirt that holds through the shoulder seasons ☀️
