On this day in 1324 (698 years ago) in Kilkenny, Petronilla de Meath was burned at the stake for Witchcraft. This was the first known case in Ireland or Great Britain of death by fire for the crime of heresy.
It started when her employer Alice Kyteler was accused of Witchcraft. The family of Kyteler’s fourth (deceased) husband pressed the local bishop to bring the charges against her. The bishop, Richard de Ledrede, had Alice, members of her family and Petronilla arrested and imprisoned in Kilkenny Castle.
Petronilla was tortured and eventually confessed to a range of charges ranging from assisting Alice in making potions to incite certain behaviours in others, to summoning demons and murdering her four husbands.
Alice managed to escape with the help of local influential friends.
One friend, is recorded as being one of those who paid the bail for Alice’s son, William Outlaw facilitating his release from Kilkenny Castle.
The friends name was Fulko De la Frene. Fulco was an early resident of the original Foulksrath Castle and it is he or his father Fluke who the castle is named after.
