Barretstown, based in County Kildare in Ireland, offers free, specially designed camps and programmes for children and their families living with a serious illness, supported behind the scenes by 24-hour on-site medical and nursing care💚

Volunteer Engagement Day is a great opportunity to learn more, meet the community, and experience the magic of volunteering ✨🙌

We were honoured to receive a special message from Jerry Buttimer, Minister of State for Charities, Community Development & Rural Transport, at our celebration last week marking both National Volunteer Week and the launch of our new Strategic Plan 2026-2030.

We were especially encouraged by the Minister’s acknowledgement of our Strategic Plan as well as his recognition of the important role Volunteer Centres play in local community life 🤝

Our Strategic Plan is now available on our website for anyone who would like to learn more about our vision and priorities for the years aheadhttps://volunteerkilkenny.ie/wp-content/uploads/2026/05/KVC_strategic_plan_draft_for_print.pdf

Together, we look forward to continuing to build stronger, more connected and more compassionate communities through volunteering.

Last Friday, we gathered to celebrate the incredible spirit of volunteering across Kilkenny at our National Volunteering Week Garden Party 💚✨

The evening also marked a special milestone for us - our 5th birthday!

Over the past five years, we’ve had the privilege of seeing the impact volunteering has in bringing people together, strengthening communities, and making Kilkenny a better place for all.

This celebration was for every volunteer, community group, partner, and supporter who has been part of our journey so far. Thank you for celebrating with us and here’s to many more years of volunteering and community in Kilkenny 💚🙌

💚 As National Volunteering Week 2026 is in full swing, we’re excited to share another inspiring story with a reminder that volunteering truly can begin from anywhere and grow into something life-changing ✨

✨ Meet Enya ✨

“My name is Enya, an Irish-Italian young person who is currently a Leaving Certificate Applied (LCA 2) secondary school student.”

Enya first became involved in volunteering through a school assignment called the Practical Achievement Task (PAT), where students were encouraged to take on a new skill or activity over a 12-week period.

💬 “What began as a structured school task developed into something I genuinely enjoyed and chose to continue beyond the assignment.”

Since August/September 2025, Enya has been volunteering with Butler Gallery 🎨 – becoming part of a welcoming cultural space.

What started at reception greeting visitors and sharing tourist information gradually grew into supporting exhibitions, facilitating workshops, and even assisting with guided tours 🌟

💬 “Volunteering at Butler Gallery has had a really positive impact on me overall. It has helped me grow in confidence, improve my employability skills, and gain meaningful real-world experience that I have carried into other areas such as media involvement, radio, and further opportunities.”

💬 “Most importantly, it has helped me feel more connected to my community and shown me the value of contributing to cultural and public spaces.”

Enya’s journey reminds us that volunteering doesn’t always begin with a grand plan. Sometimes it starts with simply saying yes to an opportunity – and discovering new confidence, passions, and possibilities along the way 🌱✨

A huge well done to Enya for all she has achieved 👏

💙 This National Volunteering Week, we’re celebrating the quiet but powerful ways volunteering shows up in our communities – often through creativity, kindness, and a deep sense of care.

🌼 Meet Geraldine through a small selection of her beautiful handmade creations. Her contribution speaks beautifully through every stitch, knit, and handmade detail ✨

“Volunteering gives me an opportunity/ focus to use my abilities and interests for good in the community. Volunteering has given me the opportunity to interact with the community in Kilkenny after moving from Dublin to live permanently here.”

“I have found the Volunteer centre in Kilkenny to be very helpful and supportive in providing information about volunteering opportunities that I can apply my energies and free time to”.

And when we say Geraldine brings her talents to life, we truly mean it 💛

Her creativity has supported so many causes – from knitted daffodils for Daffodil Day 2026 🌼, to handmade headbands and small toys for Team Hope Shoe Boxes 🎁, a warm blanket for the homeless service🧶, and countless other handmade contributions shared quietly and generously.

But one moment really stood out – a surprise delivery of a beautifully presented box containing 100 knitted daffodils, each carefully tagged “handmade” and packed with care. A huge and heartfelt contribution that played a wonderful part in the success of this year’s Daffodil Day 💛

Behind it all was not just creativity, but connection – and a little bit of teamwork magic too. Geraldine also encouraged and involved other knitters, helping grow a lovely community effort that quietly powered a big impact (we’ve heard there may have been some friendly “recruitment skills” involved 😉).

💙 Geraldine’s story is a beautiful reminder that volunteering doesn’t always mean starting something new – sometimes it means turning what you already love doing into something that helps others.

Because when passion meets purpose, even a simple hobby can grow into something that brings colour, warmth, and hope to an entire community 🌍✨
