Kilkenny Castle Welcome to the official page for Kilkenny Castle, an OPW managed site. The Parade Tower is the Castle's conference venue which is available for hire.

A 12th century castle remodelled in Victorian times and set in extensive parklands which was the principal seat of the Butler family, Marquesses and Dukes of Ormonde. Following major restoration works, the central block now includes a library, drawing room, and bedrooms decorated in 1830's splendour, as well as the beautiful Long Gallery. A suite of former serva

nt's rooms is the Butler Art Gallery, which mounts frequently changing exhibitions of contemporary art.

🌙⭐️Kilkenny Castle is delighted to take part in Culture Night once more.⭐️🌜
To celebrate Culture Night, the period rooms and exhibitions of Kilkenny Castle will be open to the public free of charge from 6pm to 9pm on Friday 19th September 2025
Please note last admission will be 8:30pm.
No advance booking required. Admission will be on a first come, first served basis

📣Important Notice - Restricted Vehicular Access📣

We would like to advise that there will be restricted vehicular access to the Castle and Park from the 4th to 6th of September.
There will be traffic restrictions and road closures in place in Kilkenny City due to Ras na Mnan taking place. This may affect routes to the castle and also Bus Bay Parking. 🚵‍🚴‍♀

What a fantastic turnout for our Heritage Week event, Discovering Flemingstown!

A huge thank you to Cóilín Ó Drisceoil and David Stone from the Discovery Programme for a fascinating and engaging talk, bringing the history and archaeology of Flemingstown to life.

It was wonderful to see so many people come along and share an interest in discovering and celebrating the heritage on our doorstep. Thank you to everyone who joined us and helped make the event such a success!

This year the Very Pink Run events are taking place in Dublin, Kilkenny and Cork.
So join a Very Pink Run in Dublin at Leopardstown on Saturday 29th August, in Kilkenny at Kilkenny Castle Park on Sunday 30th August or in Cork at MTU on Sunday 6th September.

The Chinese bedroom is connected to the blue bedroom by double doors. This bedroom is decorated with a modern reproduction of a hand painted Chinese wallpaper, part of the Chinoiserie theme of the room.

From Restoration to Revelation: The Blue Bedroom

The Blue Bedroom is one of the balcony suite of bedrooms in the North Tower. This suite of rooms were allocated to King Edward VII and Queen Alexandra in 1904. The elegant wallpaper is reminiscent of the larkspur design by William Morris and with a bathroom nearby, this was an early example of an en suite.

From Restoration to Revelation: The Kitchen Corridor

Back in its heyday, this corridor was for servants to access the kitchen and ice houses. It has been repurposed as a route to the Visitor Tearooms that still house the old ovens once used to prepare food for banquets.

From Restoration to Revelation: The Blue Corridor

This is a nineteenth-century space created during the remodeling of the central block, which allowed for easier access to the bedrooms and dressing rooms along the corridor. There were three water closets situated on this floor during the 1850s. The Gothic style light fittings along the corridor were salvaged from St Andrews Church in Dublin.
