Powerscourt Estate calls on the public to nominate Ireland’s nature champions this Summer

Working with Nature Awards 2026 now open for nominations until Thursday 11th June

Powerscourt Estate is calling on the public to get out into nature this May and nominate the individuals, community groups, organisations and small businesses helping to protect, restore and reconnect people with the natural world.

The Working with Nature Awards 2026, now in their second year, celebrate practical and inspiring action taking place across Ireland — from native planting, pollinator pathways and wildlife restoration to nature storytelling, outdoor learning and wellbeing initiatives.
Launched earlier this spring to mark Earth Day, the national awards are now open for nominations until Wednesday 3 June 2026.

As Summer brings, longer evenings and a renewed sense of life outdoors, Powerscourt is encouraging people across Ireland to take notice of the nature around them and champion the projects making a real difference.

The awards are open across three categories:
• Biodiversity & Rewilding
• Nature Media
• Nature Education & Wellbeing

Powerscourt sees the Working with Nature Awards as a natural extension of its own long-term commitment to sustainability, biodiversity and custodianship. This May call-out encourages people to reconnect with the natural world, celebrate those caring for it and help shine a light on the projects working quietly and powerfully on nature’s behalf.

The stories behind the nominations will be shared across Powerscourt’s digital channels and featured onsite at Powerscourt House throughout May and June, turning the awards into a wider national showcase for nature in action.

The judging panel includes some of Ireland’s best-known environmental voices, including Éanna Ní Lamhna and Duncan Stewart, alongside Powerscourt’s Head Gardener, Alex Slazenger.
Speaking about the awards, Sarah Slazenger, Managing Director at Powerscourt Estate, said:

‘May is one of the most beautiful times to reconnect with nature. As gardens, woodlands, hedgerows and communities across Ireland come alive, it is the perfect moment to notice the people who are caring for nature every day.

‘Through the Working with Nature Awards, we want to recognise the individuals, groups and organisations making a genuine difference, often quietly and without fanfare, and give them a platform to inspire others.’

She added:
‘At Powerscourt, protecting biodiversity and working with nature has long been central to our ethos. These awards celebrate hopeful, practical action and the growing community of people finding meaningful ways to protect and restore the natural world.’
Interview opportunities are available with members of the judging panel, including Éanna Ní Lamhna, Duncan Stewart and Powerscourt Head Gardener Alex Slazenger, who can speak about biodiversity, nature restoration, community action, outdoor learning and why May is such an important time to reconnect with the natural world.

Changing Seasons, Changing Times - Community conversations on Kilkenny’s living heritage

Events:
11am, 23rd May, Mayfair Library
3pm, 26th May, Urlingford Community Centre
6:30pm, 26th May, Mullinavat Community Centre
2pm, 28th May, Thomastown Library

Athrú, an exciting new project, funded by Creative Ireland and run jointly by County Kilkenny Heritage Office and University College Dublin’s School of Geography, is working to record and preserve Kilkenny’s living heritage, and they need your help!

Over the next few weeks four community conversations will be held across Kilkenny to better understand the aspects of Kilkenny’s living heritage that are important to the people and communities. Living heritage can be defined as the practices, traditions, skills, crafts and knowledge of our County. This heritage is not found in books, it comes from individuals and communities and is passed down across generations, often over centuries.

From farming, fishing and turf-cutting, to crafts, cures and pastimes there is a wealth of living heritage in our communities. However, recent changes in climate and lifestyle have put aspects of our unique heritage at risk of being forgotten and lost forever. Machinery and technology are changing everyday tasks, opportunities for story-telling and handing on skills and traditions are fewer, and the urgent need to protect our declining species of flora, fauna and their habitats requires important changes to traditional practices.

Cathaoirleach of Kilkenny County Council, Mary Hilda Cavanagh commented ‘This is an important opportunity to document and preserve the wealth of living heritage that survives across the County. Aspects of living heritage differ from one area to the next, reflecting our rich history, landscape, economy and society. I would encourage everyone to come along to an event and make sure their communities' stories and experiences are preserved.’

Regina Fitzpatrick, County Kilkenny Heritage Officer, is encouraging everyone with an interest in any aspect of our living heritage to attend one of the upcoming community conversations: ‘We have a short window of opportunity to document and preserve these once ordinary features of everyday life before they disappear from memory. We are inviting everyone to attend one of our community conversations to ensure that the practices and traditions from their areas are included in a county-wide database of living heritage.’
Events will take place in Urlingford, Kilkenny City, Thomastown and Mullinavat in the coming weeks and all are welcome to attend. Extracts from the Schools’ Folklore Collection highlighting local aspects of Kilkenny’s living heritage collected in the 1930s will be presented at each event and attendees will be invited to share their memories, stories and experiences with members of the project team from UCD. Refreshments will be provided.

Please come along to one of these community conversations and make sure that the parts of your heritage that you practice or know about are included!

Workshop Callout for Senior Participants

SHOPPE TOGETHER - CREATIVE SEWING WORKSHOP
June 9th, 16th & 23rd

Do you have sewing skills, craft knowledge, or a love of making that you’d like to share? Shoppe – Together invites you to take part in a series of creative workshops connecting with local teenagers facilitated by Susanne Horsch (Visual Artist working in textiles) and Julia MacConville (Visual Artist & Costume Designer) at Kilkenny Mayfair Libraries new Maker Space.

Together, we will rework existing clothing, create a personal project and support each other in developing individual textile skills and projects.
Your knowledge and lived experience are at the heart of this project—helping to pass on valuable skills while also learning fresh perspectives from a younger generation. The workshops offer a relaxed and social environment, encouraging connection, creativity, and meaningful exchange.
