We’d like to sincerely thank everyone for your patience as we carried out some much-needed maintenance on our Famine Tour.

We have both good news and some not-so-good news to share. The not-so-good news is that, due to rising costs associated with running and maintaining the tour, we’ve had to introduce a small charge. The good news is that, for just €5, you can now rent our improved audiovisual tour. Tickets will be available via Eventbrite.

We understand this change may be disappointing to some, which is why we’ve also installed new signage at each tour point. These signs offer a condensed version of the tour content for those who prefer to explore without the device.

Please know this decision wasn’t made lightly and has been under careful consideration for some time. The €5 charge is broken down to include Eventbrite fees, with the remaining amount going directly toward rental costs, future device repairs, and the ongoing maintenance of our signage.

We appreciate your continued support and hope you enjoy the enhanced tour experience.

This oil painting is one of the most famous depictions of the Irish Famine. This painting "The Potato Eaters" painted by Vincent Van Gogh in 1885, portrays a family sitting around a small dinner table in a small hovel. Their faces look to be tired and starved. The phrase "potato eater" is considered as insulting in Dutch and German. The dark, dull and bleak colours symbolise the suffering that the people of Ireland went through during this time.

This drawing of a woman and her child portrays the severity of the famine to us nowadays in a visual manner instead of reading about it. The expression on the woman's face shows the desperate need for food for herself and her child, who is wrapped up in a blanket. The dish she holds out symbolises the begging for money or food from the more successful and fortunate.
