In March, KMRT hosted members from all of the Mountain Rescue teams around Ireland at the Castlerosse hotel for a weekend of conversation, demonstrations, knowledge exchange and a general get-together. It was a packed schedule with great attendance at all events which ranged from demos of the latest in search and rescue tech to talks from some of Ireland's top adventure sportspeople. Our thanks to Dara Calleary TD for launching the vehicle. The team are hugely grateful to Kerry County Council for a grant of €150,000 to fund the purchase, which came through the Community Recognition Fund. Update: Callouts and Training

CALLOUTS: After a relatively quiet period at the end of 2025, the team have been tasked 7 times this year, with 4 of these in the past 10 days. These calls include 3 on Carrauntoohil, one on Torc, one in Killarney National Park, one in the Horse's Glen and one on Claragh mountain near Millstreet.

These call-outs total 170 volunteer hours and included a mix of lower-leg injuries, benighted parties and exhaustion.

We would ask walkers to start early and give themselves plenty of time to descend before it gets dark.

Team members have also noted the lack of preparation made by some walkers when going out on the hills. Footwear with good grip and a set of waterproofs are needed when going out in the hills, as well as plenty water and snacks.

TRAINING:

Since the last update the team has completed training in the station on tetra radio comms, first aid and hauling.

The team also trained with Rescue 115 in the Hag's Glen with the new AW189 helicopter, followed by stretcher lowers in the Devil's ladder.

Update:
Fundraiser: KMRT would like to thank Millstreet Vintage Club for their fundraiser that took place last year in aid of the team. A cheque was presented to team members Mick and Tim in Millstreet last week. These funds will go towards the running costs of the team and are hugely appreciated. Thanks to the organisers for their work on this.

Training: Team members took advantage of the recent winter conditions in the Reeks to hold a winter training session. Photos attached.

We would remind any walkers who may be planning on venturing out in wintery conditions, only to do so if you have experience in ice and snow and are equipped to navigate the hills safely.
