The first photo is Oliver with some guy who helps around here occasionally, the second photo is Saoirse holding Oliver at her 5th birthday in 2013 . Oliver was bred here around 3 years before this , his parents were wild non release able who had bred in previous years and we soft released the Owlets when they were old enough . We do not have any contact with the breeding birds only to drop food through a pipe and change the bath water every second day and this can be done with minimum disturbance .

One day Rosie was feeding and she got a notion to have a sneaky peak when she spotted a probably 14 day old owlet on the floor , Rosie brought him in , warmed him up , fed him and put him back in the nest , the following day the same thing happened, the third day it happened we decided this fella hasn’t got what it takes to survive in the Wild , we decided to intervene and took him in permanently, his 3 siblings had no issue and were soft released a few months later .

We discovered that Oliver required more food than normal , our vet believed that he wasn’t processing his food properly so always wanted more , hence Oliver , as we got to know him we were able to tell when he needed a little bit of extra help through medication or supplements, he became a fantastic ambassador for his Wild cousins helping hundreds of adults and children to appreciate how magnificent Barn Owls are and the many challenges they face , Oliver had a leading role in Ros na Rún on TG ceathair playing the part of a wild injured Barn Owl in one their episodes .

Oliver retired around 4 years ago , we decided that he had done enough traveling and lectures , we still handled and flew him ourselves but at his pace . Around a month ago Oliver was struggling to get up to his perches in his aviary so we brought him back into the house , we did try and tweak things but we were fully aware of having no control of old age , we had considered euthanasia but we could still see his old character shining through things like calling us for a bit of attention, fuss or food , if I gave him some food he would hide it and then when Rosie went by he would call her for more food , that was a life long trick of his .

Earlier this week Oliver took flight for Tir na nÓg , we have lost some very special animals through the years but Oliver touched so many people we thought he deserved a special mention , we will forever be grateful for the time we had with Oliver and cherish the memories ,

This adult Swallow was dropped into us earlier this week after he was caught by a dog injuring one of his wings , its a long-shot that he will make a full recovery , its also a long- shot that an adult Swallow will take food so easily , they are usually too stressed , but this little fella seems to agree with our plan of action so we will wait and see how he heals .

Swallows are in huge decline and there’s several reasons , changes in weather patterns, the Sahara Desert is growing , making one of their biggest challenges even more difficult with extra flying time without water , loss of habitat meaning they they have fewer suitable nesting sites and a huge decline in insects due to over use of insecticides. When will we realize that the poisons we use to kill them, will also affect us .

When I was in national school one guy in particular thought that calling me bird brain was an insult , it never bothered me because I was always fascinated by birds . When we were in 6th Class we went on a school tour on a big white bus . When we were coming home and were getting on to the bus our teacher did a roll call and my friend was missing , I was sitting by the window and could see him walking around the car park looking for our bus so I told the teacher and he went and got him . He was walking down the isle of the bus and he stared at me , I genuinely felt bad for him so I wasn’t smirking or anything but some times I think I’m saying something in my head but I sat it out loud , may be I was laughing in my head but anyway as he passed he slapped me on the head and said what’s your problem bird brain , I called him back and said , see that little bird there , he is a Swallow and he has flown around 5000 miles from Africa , he found Ireland , he found Co Clare , he found the town where he grew up and even the shed where he was born , my friend said what’s your point , I said his brain is smaller than a pea and here you are with a big head and couldn’t find a big white bus in a car park .

Getting very young nestlings in is always an uphill battle, trying to keep the temperature correct, feeding every 10 minutes or so .

Getting small nestling that have been caught by a cat is a whole different battle, it's almost guaranteed they will have an infection, not enough antibiotics or pain relief probably won't do any good , too much could kill them and then the worry with shock .

We are probably lucky with one in every 5, and it's probably one of the most frustrating issues to deal with mainly because it can be avoided by keeping cats in doors or at least in their own garden. When you consider the amount of effort birds put in to building their nest , incubating their eggs and foraging for food and all for nothing.

This little guy has doubled in size and his tail has half grown and provided I have not jinxed him , he will be going home in a few weeks .

Derek was cutting Pampas Grass in his garden found these nestling pigeons , its a very unusual place for pigeons to nest but its better to try and avoid cutting back anything this time of the year because chances are someone is living there .

He brought the pigeons in and looked after them for a few days but he wasn’t very confident in what he was doing and one of the nestlings was fading so he contacted Rosie and dropped them out .

Rosie called me to have a look at them , she said that’s 10 baby woodies now , I said no , its 8 woodies and 6 feral pigeons , these guys are not woodies , yes they are , no they are not , yes they are ,no they are not , for a finish I just said that I was looking after pigeons before you were born ,truth be told I was even born before Rosie but never allow he truth get in the way of a good argument .

Rosie said Ill tell you what , in 5 or 6 days their feathers will be through and we will know exactly what they are , when nestlings are growing their feathers are coated with a sheath that protects the feathers , the feathers just look like a tube and when its time they preen this protection off and the true colours of the feather is revealed , then she said when we know for sure that they are woodies I want you to agree to start doing a bit of work around here , I said agreed but I want you to agree to be able to be a bit more patient and understanding when we find out that they are feral pigeons .

I’m not sure how long we are together but its heading for probably 200 Barn Owl release’s but I have learnt that Rosie is very competitive and that’s probably one of the reasons that she is so good at rehabilitation but in all those years I would never have thought she was a sore loser or so deceitful , what did she do only went and swapped the feral pigeons for two woodies , I dont know where she got them or probably more important , where did she put the feral nestlings . ,

We released two Swans last week who were with us since last October, it was nice to see them go , not just for the satisfaction of watching them go home , don’t get me wrong Swans are beautiful creatures but they eat a lot and a side effect to that is they poo a lot and with their big flappy feet the place gets in a mess very quickly and with all the rain this winter we struggled to keep the place in good shape but we got two tonne of gravel into the large aviary about two weeks ago and that made a huge difference.

The day after the release we were in the large aviary and Rosie started to say , you know I can’t remember the last time , I butted in ddddddddont say it , Rosie turned around with squinty eyes and he hands on her hips and said , I can’t remember the last time that we didn’t have at least one Swan here .

The very next day we got a call about a Swan in Limerick with an injured neck , we had received a few calls about this guy but anytime that we went in we couldn’t find him , I was on my way to Limerick anyway and I took a little detour to St Michael’s Rowing Club , a lot of people around but the Swans were on the slip way eating bread , nine times out of ten the rescue goes badly wrong when there’s and audience but this was our best chance so far and I don’t think anyone even noticed me as I walked down and picked her up , I was waiting for something to go wrong because it was so easy , I got her back to the van and decided to push my luck and went back down and told the people of the dangers of feeding bread to Swans but I got the feeling that paid as much attention as the trees when I ask them to try and keep the leaves of the driveway in Autumn.

Two day later we received a call about a Swan grounded in a field near Rathkeale Co Limerick , we hate going for animals that aren’t secure because more times than not they are gone by time we get there but we were assured this lady had an injured leg and couldn’t go anywhere, thankfully she didn’t go anywhere, the fields had just been planted with Maze and had plastic covering it with strips of earth keeping the plastic in place , I think , I wouldn’t be surprised if she thought it was a lake and had a much harder landing than she expected and hurt her leg .

Rosie has been say I can’t remember the last time we won the lottery every 10 minutes for the last week but I think she has lost her touch .

Siobhán was out walking last week near the canal in limerick City and she couldn’t believe her eyes when she saw this Musk Turtle walking down the road , she walked over to pick him up and she couldn’t believe her ears when he shouted STRANGER DANGER and ran off down the road , Siobhán had the measure of him and within 50 meters he was in her handbag . The first rescue that she rang advised her to take him to a vet and have him euthanized.

All turtles are considered invasive and will do a lot of harm to an already struggling echo system, we have so many plants and animals struggling to cope with an ever shrinking habitat the last thing they need is another invasive species . People used to keep , Green Sliders , Yellow bellied and Red Eared Terrapins who were cute when they were little but would grow to the size of a dinner plate and outgrow their Water Tank , when they got big they were usually rehomed and replaced with a young terrapin, we wouldn’t take them in unless we got the tank also , we don’t use tanks but we thought if people had to buy a new tank then they might think twice about getting one . Over the last number of years Musk Turtles were getting popular mainly because they don’t get very big but kids still get bored with them and they end up being neglected or dumped like this one , he is the second one we had so far this year who was found in the wild and we had another brought to us by a lady after she convinced her nephew that the Turtle would be better off living in a pond .

I think it would be better to ban the sale of these creatures, that’s probably not fair on people who would genuinely look after them but unfortunately they are in the minority.

I arrived home some afternoon last week , maybe Wednesday or Thursday to find a car abandoned on our drive , my first thought was that Emily had changed her car but then I saw a lady walking down the drive with Mandy , Mandy didn’t look angry or grumpy so I presumed that the lady was a friend of Mandy and if she could cope with Mandy then she could cope with me so I gave my rendition of road rage .

Mandy was over today feeding babies and I asked who was her friend , Mandy said I don’t know who she is , she brought a pigeon out from Limerick, I asked if she told the lady that I was messing and Mandy said I just told her that you were always grumpy and to ignore you.

I felt like a proper gobsh*te all day , I don’t know if this lady follows our page or not but to the lady who brought Patrick the pigeon out I sincerely apologize and I’m grateful that you brought Patrick out .

A lady out walking her dog in Limerick City last week had to stop after her dog froze and started barking , having a look she saw this Lesser Black backed Gull lying in the tall grass , she rang us and by a stroke of luck I was only ten minutes away after collecting fish carcasses for our own Gulls , we try to avoid going out to collect casualties and definitely not going on wild goose chase , severals times already this year we wasted lots of time to collect casualties who we couldn’t find only to go home empty handed knowing that there was an animal needing help , there is probably animals needing help all the time but were not involved.

The lady stayed with the Gull and unknown to her he was secure , he probably got a tip from a car and got knocked in to the high grass but some how got his wing caught in the grass and then panicked trying to escape and the grass twisted into something like a rope that I found difficult to remove .

Rosie cleaned and dressed his wounds and he spent the week in a small aviary, we moved him into the large aviary today so we could monitor how well he can get around , if attitude has anything to do with healing then this guy will do fine , his very first move was to pick a fight with a duck probably 10 times his weight and then spent a few minutes shadow boxing and screaming at the other Gulls , basically saying, I have arrived.

If Gulls were allowed to do the National Lottery I think that we would be sorted for life .

We posted a while back , Anthony found this little fella on the ground in one of his sheds on the farm in Ballyneety on 27th December, because of the persistent rain we kept postponing his release , Barn Owls are not very waterproof, its the price that they have to pay for silent flight , soft feathers give them silent flight but they hold water and a wet Barn Owls weight can increase by 50 % . We believe it’s vital that they get a few good days to help them adjust back into the Wild after being in rehabilitation for a few months , it was getting the stage of now or never and thankfully the weather obliged.

We brought him home last week and met a very excited 9 yr old Ava and decided to allow Ava to release him , Eva opened the lid of the box nice and slowly, I was half looking at Ava because I wanted to see the expression on her face as the Owl flew out but it wasn’t the expression that I was expecting when nothing happened and Ava just saw a Barn Owl laying motionless, I had forgotten that he played dead to perfection, we covered him over for 10 minutes and tried again but another dead Barn Owl , the third time Ava helped me take him out of the box and let him go on the ground , we left him take of from the ground because it’s more difficult and its important that he could do that with ease , when ever we get an injured animal in we have to decide on whether they have a fighting chance or not , sometimes there isn’t any hope but when we think they have a chance we back them 100 % and we have full confidence that they will make it , I don’t think its possible to commit so much if we have doubts but it’s still such a relief to see them fly perfectly.

Ava was looking forward to going to school the following morning so she could tell her teacher and I don’t think that she will ever forget the experience and who knows she might be another Rosie in the making .

This nestling Heron was doing very well for himself and up to a week ago he was attending University Limerick , Castletroy . We don’t know if it was a prank gone wrong or over intensive study but he fell from his accommodation and ended up on the ground with an injured leg .

Nestling Herons are another young bird that can’t be helped by their parents if they are grounded , with no sign of help on the second day , looking miserable and very wet ,one of the staff contacted Nioiclin and she collected him and brought him to us , I’m not sure if it’s a gift or a curse but Nioiclin seems to be one of these people who are drawn to animals in need .

We had to hand feed him for a few days and thankfully on the third day he started to feed for himself, its not much fun getting food into the beak and working it down that long neck so the sooner they start self feeding the better , if he was in better condition we could wait and see if he would self feed but his condition was too low to take that chance .

He is in an aviary outside now and the local Grey Herons who visit every day wait on the roof of that block of aviaries for meals on wheels , we put some food on the grass and they come down and are gradually getting to know each other , when he is ready , probably a week later than he would naturally fledge we will open the door and let them mingle , we been doing this for a few years but never certain if it works on not and with a minimum of 12 Herons calling everyday and the most so far was 26 its difficult to know who is who , we did try to get the youngster wrung last year by license but we had no joy , hopefully with a little bit more experience we will be allowed to have birds we release to be wrung .

Wood pigeons and Doves usually leave their nest after 20 days or so but they don't leave the tree until they can fly at around 30 days . They spend some time branching where they practice flying and building up muscle, sometimes they get over ambitions and fall from the tree , it's debatable whether the parents will feed them on the ground or not , personally I don't think the parents feed them on the ground but I'm 100% certain the parents can't get them back up to the safety of the tree . They are not like garden birds who leave the nest early and spend a few days scurrying around the undergrowth being fed by their parents. In the natural world that's safe for them because they can get into dense hedgerows where most predators can't get to them.
Woodpigeons and Doves at this stage just flop in a heap and even struggle to stand up making them easy targets for several predators like the little Woody who was attacked by a Hooded Crow. He was already weak because it was his second day sitting on the floor without food . To be honest we were surprised he made it this far . The Dove and the other 2 woodies fell out of their nests nest in the high winds a few weeks ago.
These 4 are still being syringe fed by Rosie 4 times a day for the next couple of weeks and once they are able to pick up food by themselves they will be in an aviary and looked after by my tender loving care! They will soon realise that it is a hard life out in the wild and not everyone out there is like Rosie.

If you come across a nestling pigeon or Dove on the ground the best thing to do is try getting him back into the nest or probably even better still because you can never be certain why he ended up on the ground, would be take him to a Wildlife Rehabilitation .
