We were delighted to welcome the first passengers who travelled from Sligo to Parke's Castle on the The Rose of Innisfree Tourboat this morning.

Bringing a little bit of the surrounding countryside into the castle this morning!
Our OPW Guide Anna, on a early morning stroll near the castle picked up some wild roses, Meadowsweet, lilac and purple Loosestrife and added a little colour to our reception and visitors restrooms areas.

Exciting news!!
We are delighted to team up with The Rose of Innisfree Tourboat for a summer cruise!
Starting from 1st July and every Wednesday, the Rose of Innisfree Boat Tour departs from Doorly Park Jetty, Sligo at 10:30am, offering a scenic cruise across Lough Gill to Parke's Castle OPW on the Leitrim shore. Once docked, visitors are welcomed with a guided tour of the Castle at 11:30am, before the boat returns to Sligo at 12:20pm, arriving back by 1:30pm.

A step back 36 years ago!
One of the questions we are often asked by our visitors is why was Parke's Castle OPW chosen for restoration?
First of all the OPW - Office of Public Works felt there was a great need in the 1980's for an Interpretive Centre in the North West Region and Parke's Castle was centrally located. Secondly the architecture of the plantation period was important to the region. Thirdly the structure itself, the walls were in good condition and the main part of the Manor house, Gatehouse and Defensive tower survived. Lastly, the architect could see from the old walls the holes where the timbers for the original floors were placed. The openings in the walls for the original doors and windows were clearly visible and the diamond shaped chimneys were intact. Under the guidance of Senior Architect (NMS) Paul Mc Mahon, The Clerk of Works at the time Frank O' Connor and John Corcoran the restoration took place and Parke's Castle officially opened on Friday 8th June 1990.
