On Thursday, March 12th, Bunbeg Coast Guard bid a very difficult farewell to our Officer in Charge, Timmy Boyle, as he retired after thirty years of dedicated service.

Timmyโ€™s journey in search and rescue began in December 1996, when he played a key role in efforts to establish a dedicated inshore coastal rescue service for the area. Seirbhรญs Tarrthรกla Bheanna Cรณsta Naomh Cholmcille โ€” St. Colmcille Cliff & Coastal Search โ€” was established following extensive community fundraising, and a search and rescue team went live from Bunbeg shortly thereafter.

In the years that followed, Timmy was appointed Area Officer, leading the team in Bunbeg with commitment and a strong focus on the safety of others.

He worked closely with others to secure an inshore rescue boat for the area and ensured that volunteers received appropriate training before going to sea. Throughout his years of service, he also played an important role in advancing the unitโ€™s capabilities through the introduction of additional equipment and the ongoing development of volunteer training, something he continued to do until the very end of his service.

As the service developed, the unit was later integrated into what is now known as the Irish Coast Guard, marking an important step in strengthening and formalising coastal search and rescue in the area. Timmyโ€™s leadership role then evolved to that of Officer in Charge (OIC), where he continued to guide and support the team with the same professionalism that had defined his service from the very beginning.

During his many years of service, Timmy attended, coordinated, and led hundreds of emergency incidents, making a significant contribution to our community and many others.

Throughout his time with the unit, he also played a key role in mentoring and training generations of volunteers. His knowledge and experience have been passed on to many past and present members, leaving a lasting impact on the team that will continue well into the future.

We would like to take this opportunity to thank Timmy and his family. His commitment, and their support, are greatly appreciated.

Timmy, we wish you a happy and healthy retirement and hope you enjoy the years ahead, knowing that the service you helped to build and shape continues because of your efforts.

Bunbeg Coast Guard was delighted to welcome the Sligo-based Coast Guard helicopter โ€˜Rescue 118โ€™ to Machaire Gathlรกn last Sunday afternoon for an aircraft familiarisation exercise.

This marked our first opportunity to engage with the new AW189 aircraft, which is now fully operational from its base in Sligo.

Bristow Ireland declared full operational readiness at Sligo Airport on December 16th, representing a significant milestone in the rollout of the new Search and Rescue (SAR) contract for the Irish Coast Guard. With this transition complete, Sligo becomes the third Irish SAR base operating under the new contract, with Waterford due to transition in early 2026.

Once fully transitioned, Bristow Ireland will operate six AW189 aircraft from bases in Shannon, Sligo, Dublin Weston, and Waterford. The Irish Coast Guard will also operate a fixed-wing aircraft from Shannon.

We would like to sincerely thank the helicopter crew for taking time out of their busy schedule to facilitate this exercise. It was a hugely beneficial and educational evening for our members.

Our thanks also extend to our colleagues at MRSC Malin Head Coast Guard for their assistance, as well as Air Traffic Control at Donegal Airport and CLG Ghaoth Dobhair for kindly allowing us to use their football pitch.

We look forward to working alongside this highly advanced and impressive aircraft in the future.

Warm weather and calm seas brought many to our coastline over the weekend, resulting in a busy few days for our dedicated volunteers.

Bunbeg Coast Guard responded to three separate taskings this past weekend, providing assistance to seven individuals in incidents involving powerboats and inflatable devices.

Thankfully, all incidents were resolved safely. However, weโ€™d like to remind everyone planning to enjoy the coast to remain vigilant and take all necessary precautions before heading out on the water. We also want to reiterate an important safety message: inflatable toys are not suitable for use in open water. They can be extremely dangerous and should be avoided when visiting the sea or any large body of water.

And please remember: in the event of a beach, cliff, or coastal emergency, contact the Coast Guard on 999/112 or VHF Channel 16 โ˜Ž๏ธ
