Thank you to Minister for European Affairs, Thomas Byrne TD, for visiting Europe Direct Limerick as part of a programme of community outreach across the country to raise awareness of Ireland’s upcoming Presidency of the Council of the EU and what it means for Ireland. The Minister met with representatives from the local community to provide them with an opportunity to engage directly with a member of Government who will be centrally involved in delivering on Ireland’s objectives for our EU Presidency.

It’s that time of year again… Soapbox 2025 is back! 🎤✨

This year’s competition takes place on Wednesday 12th November and the motion for debate is: “Likes, Lies, and Legal Limits: Is it time the EU banned social media for under-16s?”

Here’s what you need to know:
🔹 Speeches: max. 3 minutes, for or against the motion
🔹 Two age categories: 16 and under and 17 and over
🔹 Regional winners take home an iPad
🔹 National Final winners in Dublin win €1,000 each
🔹 Prizes sponsored by the European Commission Representation in Ireland

Whether we like it or not, being online is part of life, and none so much perhaps as for teenagers. This session in Limerick City Library aims to raise awareness of what young people are doing online, and the associated risks and safeguards. We provide information and guidance on platforms teenagers are using, digital literacy and wellbeing, and the inherent risks of being online: oversharing and privacy, cyberbullying, sexting, grooming and digital footprint.

Europe Direct Limerick in partnership with Lero - The Science Foundation Ireland Research Centre for Software are delighted to host this free workshop with experts in the field of AI and Machine Learning. During this AI Demystified presentation, a panel of speakers will talk about their work in this exciting field and their short presentations will be followed by an panel discussion allowing you the audience to participate and get answers to your AI queries.

Our Speakers:

Dr Juan Albarracin: Postdoctoral Researcher at the Computer Science and Information System department, University of Limerick and Lero. He specializes in Deep Generative Models and General Machine Learning and currently works in application of Machine Learning algorithms for the wind industry.

Dr Ehsan Namjoo: Postdoctoral Researcher in Lero at the University of Limerick and is currently focused on developing an Explainable AI (XAI) strategy to enhance the safety and security of edge devices in the robotics industry.

Dr Clare McInerney: Education and Public Engagement Program Manager in Lero – the Research Ireland Centre for Software, at the University of Limerick.
