February’s homelessness figures show a record 15,378 people without a home, including 4,653 children. People Before Profit continues to fight for everyone in our society, regardless of income, to have access to a decent and secure place to live.

Housing should be treated as a universal public service like health and education. Public housing is the most effective way to deliver decent secure homes, based on need.

The solution is simple:

· Freeze rents, introduce strict rent controls, ban on no fault evictions and give tenants a right to apply for a rent reduction

· Use public land to build social and affordable homes.

· Abolish the income threshold limits to make public housing available to more people on a broad range of incomes with rents set at a percentage of take-home pay.

· Create and fund a state building company to retrofit and refurbish all public homes so that they meet new energy efficiency standards, as well as a system of training and recruitment.

· Establish greater controls in the building industry, including building standards, rights for construction workers and certification.

· Ban vulture funds from purchasing multiple homes.

· Establish and maintain registers of vacant and /or derelict sites and unused dwellings and give powers to local authorities and public housing bodies to enforce penalties and compulsory purchase orders.

PEOPLE BEFORE PROFIT SAY NO TO NORMALIZATION

Micheál Martin kicks off his St. Patrick's Tour in the United States, normalizing relations with the Trump Administration.

We have come to a point where every country and every movement must now decide: Do we submit or resist this imperialist bully?

We need a big re-mobilisation of the solidarity movement to demand that every move or threat by Trump must be answered with decisive action.

NO Irish politician should travel to the White House on St Patrick’s Day to pretend that all is forgiven for a bowl of shamrocks.

The answer is clear: RESIST

🔻DISGRACEFUL🔻

Half of court applications for protection of victims of abuse in Limerick DENIED.

People Before Profit stands for a radical improvement in the lives of women, men, and non-binary people. We must continue to fight for a society free from sexism.

Ireland will not be liberated until women, as well as trans and non-binary people, are fully liberated and fully supported. We need to challenge issues at government level while also building mass movements on our streets, in our workplaces, and in our communities.

The lack of social and affordable housing has meant some victims of domestic violence continue to stay in abusive relationships longer than they should.

Domestic violence has no place in a progressive Ireland!!

MAKE IT YOUR NEW YEAR'S RESOLUTION to join us!

We have a serious challenge to rise to this year. Make it your resolution to fight back with People Before Profit!

Now more than ever we need a strong socialist movement to take on the multitude of crisis plaguing our communities and a clear analysis of our problems.

We are witnessing the decay of the global capitalist system. Chaos, brutality, and instability unfold before our eyes.

There can be no doubt about the scale of this instability. Anger is growing, fueled by rising prices, obscene inequality, and a generation locked out of affordable housing.

The worlds major imperialist powers are ramping up for military conflicts and the illusions of Western “freedom” are melting away.

In the Middle East, America’s ally, Israel, is conducting a brutal, genocidal war on the Palestinian people. For over a year, Western governments have expressed “concern” while continuing to arm and provide political cover for this atrocity.

Meanwhile, in the United States, Trump has emerged victorious after rival billionaire lobby groups slugged it out in the November election.

The new normal in Western democracy is a heightened racist and sexist discourse, with Trump promising to deport “millions” of migrants. Behind this vile rhetoric lies an open and aggressive consolidation of state power by billionaires.

The key issue is whether working people will look to the left or the right.

When a serious left emerges—one willing to challenge the system—many can be won over to it.

In Ireland, FF and FG continue their electoral decline, albeit at a slower pace. They hold power only with the support of rural independents, led by Michael Lowry—the disgraced former FG minister.

The key question is: who will lead the opposition and offer that serious left answer

People Before Profit, is up for the fight. We stand for real socialist change that uproots the system of greed. We openly oppose racism in all its forms, offer an eco-socialist alternative to save the planet, stand up for LGBT, and women’s rights, and fight for a strong workers’ movement that delivers system change!

It's nearly three weeks since the election. Fianna Fáil and Fine Gael are still in 'negotiations' while 448 people including newborn babies go homeless on our streets in Limerick.

Fianna Fáil and Fine Gael both support the vulture funds, the corporate landlords and the profiteering corporations. Any 'negotiations' are just a tussle for the best Government jobs and perks.

That's why People Before Profit are for a principled Left opposition to take the fight to these parties. Don't join them in coalition. Instead build campaigns and movements, on the streets, in workplaces, and in our communities. Together we can fight for a socialist Ireland!!!

LOOTING LANDLORD MAYOR LINES POCKETS FROM CRISIS HE HELPED CREATE

We deserve a mayor and a council truly representative of the working people of this city, not the landlords of Ireland who are profiteering off of our housing misery! John Moran talks about his “ambition for Limerick [not being] more of the same” and yet, we have “more of the same” through an “independent” landlord mayor!

Riding the wave of anti-establishment sentiment in the lead up to the previous national local elections and in Limerick, the first ever mayoral elections, John Moran positioned himself as an alternative to the FFG duopoly that has ruled the country for 100 years. In his campaign material, he proudly stated that he was the secretary general of the Department of Finance (under the ministerialship of Fine Gael austerity TD, Michael Noonan); but what he failed to mention was his role in creating the housing crisis today.

His tenure as secretary general is marred (or lauded if you are in the landlord and developer circles of Ireland) by the introduction of Real Estate Investment Trusts (otherwise known as Vulture Funds); the vehicle driving Ireland's rampant speculation bubble and the spark which ignited the tinderbox that was the Irish housing market following the crash of 2008.

For all his talk about the "Vienna model" for housing and "urbanism", Moran is yet to define what he means by either of these things. Anything less than decommodifying housing and the increased provision of social housing IS NOT GOOD ENOUGH!

Limerick doesn't need to be represented by the landlord and capitalist class which is wringing its people, resources and land dry in the interests of profit! Together, we must tackle the issue of housing and cost of living at its core; the capitalists running our country and the battle between the interests of the people and the rich’s profits. Stand up to “independent” and establishment neoliberal frauds, take politics into the hands of the people and get involved in the fight for a 32 county socialist republic that puts people before profit! Join PBP today and get involved in the fight!
