Help Map Ireland’s Red Squirrels & Pine Martens
Limerick people are encouraged to take part in a nationwide Citizen Science survey tracking red squirrels, grey squirrels, and pine martens-some of Ireland’s most iconic woodland mammals.

Why it matters: Red squirrels, Ireland’s only native squirrel species, have faced major pressure from invasive grey squirrels for over a century - but there’s good news! Their numbers are recovering in many areas. This positive trend is strongly linked to the comeback of the pine marten, a native predator that preys on grey squirrels, giving reds a chance to rebound.
Pine martens, once nearly wiped out, have been protected since the 1970s and are spreading across much of Ireland again - a major conservation success story.

How YOU can help: If you spot a red or grey squirrel or see a pine marten in your area submit your sighting to the National Biodiversity Data Centre. This helps map population changes across Ireland. Your local knowledge is incredibly valuable.
Helping us learn more about native wildlife and how these species are recovering.

Share your sightings, spread the word, and become a Citizen Scientist today.

A message from the Breeding Waders EIP - Breeding Season is under way
From March 01st to July 31st, many of Ireland’s breeding waders and other ground‑nesting birds will be nesting, laying eggs, and raising chicks.
the Breeding Waders EIP Senior Project Manager, is highlighting the urgent need to protect these vulnerable species. Breeding waders are experiencing severe declines in Ireland, and they need our help now more than ever.
If you enjoy spending time outdoors, please keep the following in mind to help protect parent birds, eggs, and chicks during this crucial time:

How You Can Help
• Stay on designated roads and footpaths during the breeding season
• Do not approach nesting birds or chicks
• Keep all dogs on a lead at all times in high nature areas
• Avoid driving off‑road
• Keep disturbance to a minimum
The Breeding Waders EIP, and the NPWS, have implemented a range of conservation actions to support these species. Your cooperation can make a real difference to the success of the 2026 breeding season.

Please share this message with anyone who enjoys nature or outdoor recreation.
Let’s all enjoy Ireland’s landscapes responsibly, while giving wildlife the space it needs to thrive.
