Ballyhoura Development is a community-led Local Development Company, and a registered charity, which works with communities, families, individuals and businesses in the Ballyhoura region of East Limerick and North Cork. The company has successfully managed, coordinated and implemented a wide range of national and European projects and programmes since its establishment in 1989, and currently delivers over 30 programmes, focussing on three key aims of:

Economic Development
Environmental Development

Partnership and participation are the guiding principles of Ballyhoura Development's work and activities, and a bottom-up approach is central to all of the organisation's programme delivery. 🎟️ Free Conference – Tickets Are Going Fast

We’re looking forward to welcoming Dr Katriona O’Sullivan as keynote speaker at the CITICESS Final Conference on Wednesday, 18 November at Charleville Park Hotel.

A psychologist, author of Poor and passionate advocate for social inclusion, Katriona will bring a powerful perspective on overcoming barriers, creating opportunity and the role of inclusive support systems in changing lives.

Her keynote will form part of a full day exploring how social services can become more inclusive, responsive and genuinely person-centred, drawing on learning from the CITICESS partnership across Europe.

The conference will bring together policymakers, practitioners, community organisations and European partners to:

🔹 Share practical learning and outcomes from CITICESS
🔹 Explore how European innovation can be adapted to local needs
🔹 Discuss more coordinated and person-centred approaches to service delivery
🔹 Take part in optional afternoon study visits showcasing community-based initiatives

Ballyhoura Development is delighted to promote the new Traveller Roma Local Employment Initiative, supporting members of the Traveller and Roma communities across East Limerick and North Cork.

Yesterday, Eugene O'Donnell and Crystal Ward attended the Traveller Anti-Bullying Conference at the Silver Springs Hotel, organised by Traveller representative groups in Cork and Kerry.

The conference provided an important opportunity to connect with organisations and representatives working to promote inclusion, equality and opportunities for Traveller and Roma communities.

Ballyhoura Development is offering practical training to help community groups strengthen their governance, management and day-to-day operations.

The course will cover areas including:
• Choosing the right structure for your organisation
• Understanding committee and board roles
• Setting agendas and facilitating effective meetings
• Recording decisions and keeping minutes
• Developing action plans
• Good governance and best practice
• Communications with your community and stakeholders

There will also be a follow-up in-person workshop in Coote Hall in Kilmallock on 1 December at 7pm, giving participants the opportunity to put the learning into practice.

🌱 From on-farm trials to shared learning on soil health

Ballyhoura Development was pleased to take part in the SOILCRATES-Ireland Mid-Term Seminar at Technological University of the Shannon Thurles, bringing together farmers, researchers, policymakers and industry representatives to share practical learning on sustainable soil management.

Representing the Limerick pilot sites, Carmel O’Sullivan and William Burchill shared progress from their on-farm experiments.

Carmel’s pilot is exploring grassland species diversification and seaweed-based products to address soil compaction, waterlogging and low fertility, while William is testing digestate application and multispecies swards to improve soil health and reduce reliance on chemical fertilisers.

The seminar also included a demonstration of the SOILCRATES Farmers Toolbox, alongside discussion on biomethane, digestate use, RENURE, agroforestry and biochar.

Just as importantly, the day created space for farmers from different pilot sites to meet, compare experiences and discuss what is working in practice.

Ballyhoura Development supports community engagement within SOILCRATES-Ireland–Ireland in County Limerick.

🤝 Ballyhoura Development was delighted to join partners from across Europe in Rzeszów, Poland, for the final transnational meeting of the MYCo - Meet Your Colleague project.

As the project moves towards completion, the meeting provided an important opportunity to review the final project results, share progress on multiplier and dissemination activities, and agree the remaining steps before the project concludes.

Partners also focused on the sustainability and future use of MYCo resources, alongside monitoring, evaluation and preparation of the final project report.

The meeting marked an important stage in bringing together the learning developed across the partnership and helping ensure that the project’s resources can continue to support more inclusive and intergenerational workplaces beyond the formal project period.

This November, The Collective Wreath – Our Place, Our Seasons, Our Future comes to Cappamore for a creative evening exploring the things that connect us to place - our seasonal traditions, local stories, memories, food, materials and the landscapes around us.

Together, we’ll reflect on what makes this area special, how a changing climate may affect the things we value, and create a collective wreath for the community.

You’ll also have the chance to make and take home your own wreath, with local festive produce served during the evening.

No previous creative experience is needed — this is an informal, welcoming event for adults from Cappamore and the wider surrounding area.

🌿 Peatland Visioning Workshops Bring Communities Together

Community members recently came together to explore the wildlife, heritage and personal connections that make our local peatlands so important.

Led by ecologist Rachel Dowling and artist Becky Hatchett, the Peatland Visioning Workshop combined discussion on peatland ecology, biodiversity, climate resilience and water quality with creative activities designed to capture local stories, memories and knowledge.

Participants reflected on their own connections with local peatland landscapes and discussed the practical actions needed to protect, restore and manage these habitats for the future.

The ideas shared during the workshop will help contribute to a future vision for the uplands, shaped by both community experience and an understanding of the ecological value of these landscapes.

The workshop also highlighted the importance of bringing local people into conversations about conservation and ensuring that future approaches reflect the knowledge, memories and priorities of the communities connected to these places.

🌿 Managing Stress in Our Daily Lives – Free Six-Week Programme
As part of the Farm Forward Programme, Ballyhoura Development is supporting a new six-week wellbeing programme designed to help participants better understand stress, strengthen resilience and develop practical ways of managing everyday pressures.

Delivered by the ._project (SHEP), the programme will provide a supportive and welcoming space to explore stress management, emotional wellbeing and practical strategies that can be used in daily life.

The programme is suitable for farmers, farm family members, people living in rural communities, and anyone interested in improving their wellbeing and building positive stress-management skills.
