This year saw the grotesque development of the world's first trillionaire, albeit temporarily. Elon Musk is a walking advertisement as to why you should support a socialist alternative to this fascist saluting, vile tech bro & the class he represents.

2026 has seen turmoil around the world, from the war on Iran, waged by Israel & the US, to the ongoing genocide in gaza, to the extreme weather events we are facing, Solidarity continues to campaign on the issues, both local & national, that impact workers, the oppressed & our planet.

Solidarity played an important role in scoring a victory against the tech company 'Manna' and their delivery drones business. The constant noise and invasiveness was a constant nuisance in the affected communities and our TD Ruth Coppinger, along with others, consistent campaigning eventually forced Manna to abandon their operations in both Dublin and Cork.

Our work around the banning of fox hunting, fighting alongside other animal rights groups, have forced politicians and parties to shift their positions, like Sinn Féins, & we will continue to fight until this barbaric practice ends.

The FAI & government's attempt to normalise the barbaric, genocidal Israeli state by facilitating two football matches with Israel this Autumn is being opposed all the way by both fans and pro-palestine activists. Solidarity has helped organised opposition to these games through instigating campaigns in many areas and helped organise protests at the FAI and football matches to get these games stopped.

Locally in Limerick city a Solidarity activist in Janesboro helped with a campaign to save Boro Park & defeat the machinations of Mayor John Moran who wanted to build modular homes in the park, denying the community access to the only green space they had.

These are some small examples and significant victories we have managed this year, & we are proud of the fact that we are only funded by the people we fight for and fight alongside. Volunteer who publicly opposed the genocide In Palestine has had their volunteer status revoked by Treaty United!

Last Friday at a Treaty United FC game, a recognised club volunteer & supporter put up a banner reading 'Stop the Game' - a slogan which has garnered huge support across the country. The banner was removed by officials, reportedly by order of the managing director. Today we have learned that the volunteer has been removed from their position with the club entirely being told that political statements are not tolerated. Club officials callously said, “While we appreciate your willingness to help, we don’t feel the fit has been right for the culture and environment we are working hard to create…With immediate effect, you are no longer authorised to represent the club in any capacity”.

This is an absolutely outrageous move by Treaty United and is shameful treatment of a volunteer who has given 5 years of hardwork & dedication to local football. Nobody should be penalised for making a peaceful, principled & conscientious objection to an ongoing genocide. Is this not a breach of freedom of speech and the right to protest?

Time & time again the refrain 'sports is not political' is weaponised against those who take a stand against the sportswashing of genocide. There is huge support across society for the games to be cancelled, support which the FAI & now it would seem that includes local officials are intent on quashing. Where was this decision made? Were the members and supporters of the club consulted?

An IFSO survey this year found that 75.6% of football supporters do not support the Ireland/Israel games going ahead. While a PFA Ireland survey found that 2/3s of football players also did not support the games.

Football does not belong to investors, owners or managers. Football belongs to the people. It belongs to the players, the fans, and the communities that support them. The volunteer who put up the banner last week was merely putting words to the feelings of the majority locally.

There was a strong turnout for the Limerick picket at the Markets Field Stadium this evening. Chatting to the fans it was clear that the majority of people do not want the Irish team to participate in the sportswashing of genocide by being coerced into playing the Israeli team.

We learned afterwards that a 'Stop the Game' banner hung by fans inside the stadium was removed by what appeared to be match officials. This is symptomatic of official Ireland's attempt at quashing dissent by those who take a stand against genocide.

In the midst of a genocide there is no neutral ground & no neutral cultural arenas. We must build on the resistance that exists by building the momentum to have the games stopped entirely.

Israel have killed yet another Palestinian footballer. Meanwhile, the Israeli national team are free to participate in football tournaments across the world & to use sports to white-wash their crimes against humanity. The Irish men's team are expected to participate in this sportswashing. Take a stand, support the players - join the picket TODAY!

Next in our series on the history of resistance in sports are the Spanish Women's football team. As the Irish men's team are being forced to play the team of a genocidal nation, we take inspiration from the resistance of these players team in 2023.

During the medal ceremony after Spain’s victory in the 2023 World Cup Final Spanish Federation President Luis Rubiales grabbed Spanish player Jenni Hermoso by the head with his hands and forcibly kissed her on the lips. When outrage erupted, the Spanish Football Federation supported Rubiales and attempted to get Jenni Hermoso to appear in a video with Rubiales. When she and other players refused, the Federation issued a statement in her name downplaying the incident. In response Hermoso issued a statement through her trade union, stating that she wanted to see Rubiales punished for his actions.

At a subsequent meeting of the Spanish Federation’s general assembly Rubiales was given a standing ovation. This led to a wave of protests. 81 current and former members of the Spanish women’s team used a statement calling for a boycott of the Spanish Federation until its leadership was removed. Most of the coaching staff of the different women’s national teams resigned in protest. Over a month after the incident Rubiales resigned after mounting public pressure & which also saw the men's team supporting their female colleagues.

Solidarity activists attended a protest by students and teachers this morning at 9am at the Student Campus building on Patrick street.

Student Campus is an English language school situated in the heart of Limerick city. Management closed the school in Early June, explaining in an email to students that essential maintenance was being carried out, with a plan to reopen on June 16th.

But to date it has not reopened, leaving students and teaching staff in the lurch. Students had paid fees in advance and teachers at the school are also owed wages.

Solidarity activists spoke to Massilia, a teacher at the campus, who explained the management had been paying them their salary in installments up to the abrupt closure, Massila and others now fear that they may not get what is owed and they're worried management may never be seen again.

These privately run schools are often open to exploitation and abuse as they are not properly regulated by the government. In 2018 Lanlearn closed its doors, again in Limerick city, leaving teaching staff with unpaid wages.

Massilla and others are determined to fight for what they are owed and explained how they now have nothing left to lose.

Solidarity supports all their demands and would encourage the public to offer support and assistance. We call for regulation in this highly profitable area of education so that protections are afforded to both staff & students. Supports need to be put in place for workers who are discarded at the whim of bosses who have profited from their labour & unions must step up to the mark in defending their members. Huge thanks to Ruth Coppinger for coming down and speaking at our meeting in the Absolute Hotel in Limerick last night. And to all the other speakers. The FAI deciding to move the Ireland v Israel game out of Ireland has stopped the Irish people’s right to protest it. We would have shut the game down because the vast majority of Irish people are totally against, and disgusted at, it happening.

An appeal is now being made to the football players to take action. They would have the support of the entire country.

As Ruth pointed out - there was a movement against apartheid in South Africa in the 1970s and 80s. Some Irish rugby players decided not to play. One player who did play, John Robbie, later wrote a book and said of his regret at playing: “I used to think did I actually know how bad apartheid was? Of course I did. I should never have toured. Despite what I went on to achieve, I consider it a stain that will never leave me.”

If the Irish football players refuse to play against Israel, they will be remembered in history for taking a stand that could set a domino effect. And not, like Robbie, be left with a stain that will never leave them.

We continue our series on resistance in sports ahead of our public meeting today - 7pm at the Absolute Hotel V94 WP52 - with a deeper look at the black power salute at the 1968 Olympics.

At the 1968 Olympics in Mexico City the 200m was won by US athlete Tommie Smith in a world record time. Australia’s Peter Norman finished second and another American athlete, John Carlos finished third. The medal ceremony became more famous than the race as both American athletes became renowned for the Black Power Salute.

With the agreement of Norton, the American athletes engaged in the most famous protest in sporting history. Both athletes were shoeless, wearing black socks, to represent black poverty. Smith wore a black scarf around his neck to represent black pride. Carlos had his tracksuit top unzipped to express solidarity with blue-collar workers in the USA and wore a necklace of beads in commemoration of those who were lynched or killed by racist mobs in America. All three athletes wore Olympic Project for Human Rights badges. As the American anthem played the American athletes raised a clenched fist with a black glove and bowed their heads. As they left the podium they were booed by the crowd.

Less known about the Black Power Salute protest at the Mexico Olympics was the role of Australian Peter Norman. North was a prominent critic of the then White Australia Policy and a supporter of the Olympic Project for Human Rights (one of its objectives was the removal of Brundage as President of the IOC). Peter Norman actively supported the protest by Tommie Smith and John Carlos in 1968 stating ‘I will stand with you’. After the protest he was ostracised by the Australian Olympic Committee (AOC) and attacked in the Australian media. Despite being one of the best 200m athletes in the world he was not selected for the Australian team for the 1972 Olympics in Munich. He held the Australian national record at 200m for more than 50 years.

Unlike other famous Australian Olympians, Peter Norman was not invited to do a lap of honour at the opening ceremony of the 2000 Sydney Games. He died in 2006 and among his pallbearers were Tommie Smith and John Carlos. After years of campaigning by his family, in 2012 the Australian House of Representatives made an official posthumous apology to Peter Norman for his treatment. Subsequently the AOC continued to claim that Norman had not been mistreated after the 1968 Olympics and it wasn’t until 2018 that the AOC awarded Norman the Order of Merit for his role in the 1968 protest but still claimed ‘we didn’t do anything wrong by him’.
