Thanks to Isabelle for highlighting and removing this bag of clothes that had been dumped at the Potato Market.

Illegal dumping is not acceptable. Public spaces belong to everyone, and we all have a role in keeping them clean and respected!

More dumping. And more frustration!! (Post 1/2)

A sizeable collection of clothes appeared at the Potato Market this week. While some may think dumping bags of clothing in public spaces is a convenient community service...it is not! There are actually designated clothing recycling banks for that purpose!!

And to those stuffing duvets and pillows into the clothing banks despite the giant signs saying “No duvets or pillows”... please stop. And dispose of them correctly.

Just for clarity:

🚫 The Potato Market is not a clothing collection point.

✅ A clothing bank is for clothes.

🚫 A duvet is not clothes.

🚫 A pillow is not clothes.

Every bag dumped and every bank clogged with unsuitable items creates extra work for volunteers and costs for the community.

Please stop treating public spaces as your personal rubbish collection service. If you're able to carry it there, you're able to dispose of it properly.

📣COMPETITION TIME📣

Loughrea Tidy Towns volunteers, aided enthusiastically by our dedicated residents, are doing a magnificent job of cleaning, weeding, planting and litter picking around the town. We want to encourage the town to keep the momentum going!

We are introducing a new initiative this year in the form of an ESTATES & STREETS COMPETITION . There will be a few categories based on numbers of houses in your estate or street, so there will be a place for everyone. So why not get together with a few residents and give it a go!

Contact us if you need help or advice. We will have prizes! Thanks to Galway County Council who have agreed to be sponsors.

To ensure independence, judges will not be local. They will be looking out for the following:

✨Neat and tidy landscaping with no evidence of spraying of commercial weedkiller (i.e. no brown edges)
✨Flower planting – baskets, pots, window boxes and flowerbeds
✨Care for biodiversity eg areas for wildflowers, hedgerows, native trees.

Prizes also for:
✨Best Window Box
✨Best Hanging Display
✨Best Young Person’s Garden and
✨Best Accessible Gardens

If you would like to enter your estate or street in the competition, email us ([email protected]) with the following:

Name of estate/street,
Number of houses (approx.)
Enter before 15th July

Judging will be at the end of August, so there is lots of time!

Well done to the staff of RSK Irish Drilling Limited who recently removed the weeds at Old Galway Road and made a fine job of it 😊 Well done also to the people of Old Galway Road who keep the area looking so well 😊

Did you notice how well the Fair Green looked for the recent BioBlitz? This was thanks to the Loughrea Gaelic Football Club Clean Up Day.

The club approached Loughrea Tidy Towns with a much appreciated offer of help, and we were delighted to accept.

On Sunday, 17th May, the football club’s junior members and their parents took to the streets early in the morning and transformed the areas around the Fair Green.

A huge thank you to Andrea Howard Sellars for coordinating the event, to all the children and parents who turned out in force, our Tidy Towns volunteers and to Cathal Spellman, who kindly stopped to lend a hand as he was passing by.

We are a small volunteer group, so gestures and efforts like this from community clubs and organisations make a real difference and help us keep the town looking its best for everyone.

We're at a loss for words.

More rubbish discarded on the street beside the same bin on The Hill - despite the signs and repeated appeals to stop.

This latest dumping includes food waste mixed with plastic bottles (which can be returned for a refund) and paper. Once again, the responsibility for cleaning up this mess is being pushed to other members of the community.

Elsewhere, part of a recliner couch dumped and abandoned at the side of a road.

Illegal dumping is unacceptable and unfair on residents, volunteers, and council workers who have to deal with the consequences.

Please dispose of waste responsibly and stop illegal dumping!

Today is Make Way Day. And you you can join in! 📸

Make Way Day is all about keeping our footpaths safe and accessible for everyone. Cars on paths or bins left in the way can make simple journeys difficult or dangerous for people with disabilities, parents with buggies and older neighbours.

Today - take a look around the town and snap a photo of obstacles, share it using and support more accessible streets for all !
