🏊♂️ Mallow Swimming Pool – Project Update
From: Eoghan Kenny TD & Cllr Ronan Sheehan
We want to provide a clear update on the renovation works at Mallow Swimming Pool, following engagement with users and Mallow Swans Swimming Club.
🔧 Project Overview
• The renovation is a €5.2 million investment to fully upgrade and future-proof Mallow Swimming Pool for the people of Mallow and the wider North Cork region.
• €980,000 is funded through grants from the Department of Tourism, Culture, Arts, Gaeltacht, Sport and Media and the Sustainable Energy Authority of Ireland (SEAI).
• The remaining €4.2 million is funded directly by Cork County Council, representing a very significant commitment to the facility and its users.
🏗️ Timeline & Progress
• The project went through planning and design over several years and was tendered in 2024.
• Cumnor Construction was appointed in January 2025.
• The pool closed in March 2025, with an initial reopening date of January 2026.
• Works began on site in March 2025.
⚠️ Reasons for Delay
During early construction stages, unforeseen issues emerged, including:
• Utility diversions
• Unexpected ground conditions
• Structural and foundation issues uncovered during demolition
These were outside the control of both the contractor and Cork County Council and required additional works.
📅 Revised Reopening Date
• A revised construction programme was issued in October 2025.
• Works are now scheduled to be completed in May 2026.
• Reopening is expected in June 2026.
• Pool users, Mallow Swans Swimming Club, and all elected members of the Kanturk–Mallow Municipal District were informed at that time.
🤝 Support for Users
• Cork County Council recognises the disruption caused by the closure.
• A €10,000 community grant was provided to Mallow Swans Swimming Club in 2025 to help with increased operating costs.
• The club can apply again this year under the Community Grants Scheme for further support.
✅ Commitment Going Forward
• Cork County Council and the contractor remain fully committed to reopening the pool as soon as possible.
• Safety, construction, and regulatory requirements must be fully met before reopening.
• Users can contact the Swimming Pool Manager with queries at any time.
• Any further changes to timelines will be communicated promptly.
We appreciate the patience of all pool users and clubs and will continue to work to ensure this vital community facility reopens as soon as possible.
