Ballynamona Graveyard

Ballynamona Graveyard While the original Church and "town" at Ballynamona were destroyed, the Church was rebuilt in 1717. There is a round-headed entrance door in west wall of tower.

Templemichael Church is a Protestant parish church in Ballynamona Graveyard which is partially visible from the nearby N20 Cork-Mallow roadway in the townland of Ballinamona and it is a distinct landmark along the Blackwater Way (Avondhu) walking trail. The presence of a Church of Ireland church in Ballynamona is recorded as dating as far back as the 13th century when the site was developed by Ang

lo-Norman de Cogan Lords, who built Castle Barrett tower house on a nearby hill, founded a "town" on the Ballynamona site, and established a Knights Hospitaller preceptory locally. Three centuries of religious service ended at Ballynamona in 1978 when the Church was deconsecrated. Templemichael Church boasts a stone plaque over the west door which bears a Latin inscription: 'Gloria Deo in excelsis. Templum hoc antiquum de Temple-Michael alias Mourne-Abbey jam diu dirutum reconditum fuit Anno Redemptionis MDCCXVII. Et ab inauguratione serenissimi Georgii Domini Regis tertio'. The inscription translates as follows: 'Glory be to God in the highest. This ancient church of Temple-Michael, alias Mourne-Abbey, was restored in the 1,717th year of the redemption and the third year since the inauguration of our most serene Lord King George'. The inscription concludes with a final line in English: 'Fear God, honour the King'. The church has a rectangular nave (13m E-W; 8m N-S) with a 3-stage pinnacled tower attached at west end and a shallow semi-circular apse at east end. The nave is lit by three windows in both the north and south walls: wooden frames with two lights in round-headed embrasure, and a similar window in apse. The plain interior is covered by a barrel-vaulted plastered ceiling. A number of gravestones dating back to the 17th century are located alongside the church. According to Fitzgerald (1917-20, 163) the former Church of Ireland graveyard is also 'thickly studded with headstones belonging to Roman Catholics'. The above information is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Cork. Volume 3: Mid Cork' (Dublin: Stationery Office, 1997) and Bill Power's "Mourneabbey Church: A Brief History" in Mallow Field Club Journal, Volume 18, 2000, pp. 104-112.

Over the past four months, something really special has been happening here in Mourneabbey.

What started as an idea has grown into eight movies, 150+ local people, months of rehearsals, filming days, fundraisers, laughter, nerves, late nights — and a community coming together in a way we’ll never forget. This Saturday night, it all comes to a close at our Mourneabbey Movie Awards Night.

Thanks to the unbelievable generosity of our parish and supporters, we’ve already raised considerable funds towards the enhancement of our community facilities. We are so grateful — and so proud.

Now, for the final few days, we want to gently open the door to those who’ve been watching from a distance.

To those who grew up here and now live elsewhere.

To those living abroad who still call this place “home”.

To friends and family who’ve followed along on social media, cheered us on, shared our posts, and smiled at what a small community can do.

To those who started their underage sporting careers with Clyda Rovers or Mourneabbey Ladies.

To those whose family members have settled here and who visit here for special ocassions.

This fundraiser isn’t just about movies.

It’s about what comes next.

We are building and extending our community centre to create: • A new multi-purpose space for young and old — from toddlers to older members of our community

• A sensory room that will make a real difference for families and children with additional needs, including children with ASD

• Further development of our pitches and facilities in a Community Complex that we are always striving to improve.

These spaces will be used every single week. They will support classes, gatherings, meetings, sport, inclusion, connection — and they will serve not just today’s community, but generations to come.

This is one of the biggest fundraising efforts we have ever undertaken. We know many locals have already given so generously, and we’re deeply conscious of that. This final iDonate page (link in bio) is simply for anyone who would like to feel part of this moment, this achievement, and this future.

DEADLINE is 8PM Tonight Sunday Jan 25th.

*VIEWING LOUNGE INFORMATION*
Due to overwhelming interest, the Mourneabbey Movie Awards Night on Saturday, 7th February at the Charleville Park Hotel is now completely sold out.
In response to the exceptional demand, we are currently exploring the possibility of introducing a limited Viewing Lounge within the Charleville Park Hotel on the night.
The Viewing Lounge would allow guests to watch the full Movie Awards programme live on a large screen in a separate room within the hotel for a reduced ticket price of €20. Following the conclusion of the awards (from approximately 11:00pm), guests in the Viewing Lounge would then be invited to join the main function room to enjoy the band, music, and celebrations with everyone else.
The Viewing Lounge will only go ahead if sufficient interest is shown.
For this reason, we are now opening a waiting list.
If demand is high enough, places in the Viewing Lounge will be limited.
If you would like to add your name to the waiting list,
please contact one of the following committee members BY SUNDAY 25TH JAN 8PM:

John Walsh: 0862987427
Aisling Murphy: 0866000409
Ciara O'Sullivan: 0857838513
Niamh O'Sullivan: 0872213103

Thank you once again for the phenomenal enthusiasm for the Mourneabbey Movie Awards Night. We are doing everything possible to accommodate as many people as we can and truly appreciate your continued support.
