Hello all,

It has been a busy summer for the Heritage Group! In early May we put the word out for volunteers to help with the maintenance of the Holy Trinity Graveyard in Mount Temple, as the graveyard was quickly being reclaimed by nature. As one of the key historical landmarks of the village, we felt it was vital that this beautiful piece of history was not lost.

We had a great response from locals, and since then we have been hard at work, slowly making our way through mounds of ivy, bushes, trees and everything in between! However, the results speak for themselves, as you can see from the photos, and the graveyard is still a lovely place for a quiet walk or moment of reflection, away from the hustle and bustle of life.

Thanks to our hardy group of volunteers, made up of Tom Daly, Frankie Keena, Cathal Slevin, James Rabbitte, Eleanor Claffey, Louise Allen, Hubert Sheerin and Larry Nugent, and a sincere thanks goes to Tom Daly, who put the group together and got momentum going for this project. Also thanks to Joe Rourke who helped build a ramp for the lawnmower!

We are now finished for the Winter months, but hope to be back out again next Spring, so if you'd like to be apart of conserving some of our local history, make sure to give Tom a call! 😄

Invite

Interested in recording wrought iron gates? The first meeting of a project to record wrought iron gates with communities across Westmeath takes place at 10am on Sat 3rd June in Baylin National School. Shem Caulfield will discuss wrought iron gates & lead a visit to gates in the area - All welcome!
The aim of the project is to celebrate the trade of the Blacksmith and to get people out and about photographing and documenting the wrought iron gates and old gate piers in their area. This will help to create a database from which, in time, it is planned to create an exhibition.
This project is an action of the Westmeath Heritage Plan and is being funded by The Heritage Council.
Meeting organised by the Mount Temple Baylin Heritage Group.

We are so grateful to Westmeath County Council for the ongoing support towards our projects. Over the last number of years we have received funding from the council under Cathaoirleacht Awards, Community Enhancement Programme, Creative Ireland and Community Cemetery Grants.
