🟩 Today is Make Way Day, this is an annual campaign that brings the disability and wider community together to consider the needs of people with disabilities in the public spaces we all share.

🟩 Westmeath County Council in conjunction with Westmeath Disability working group members are delighted to be taking part in the National Make Way Day 2026 Campaign.

🟩 Today groups are walking routes in Mullingar, Athlone and Kilbeggan to raise awareness about the problems caused by obstacles blocking footpaths and to make our streets for people with disabilities more accessible.
“Hey, this blocks my way!” is our message of the day.

📖 Start National School with a Story

📖 Starting school this year? Pick up your child’s free Book Bag at your local Westmeath library! Two books to keep, parent tips, and a My Little Library wallet — everything to begin their reading journey.

📖 Each bag contains two free books for children to keep, featuring stories about starting school, making friends and big emotions. It also includes helpful guidance for parents on supporting the transition to primary school, along with information about what’s on offer in your local library.

📖 Westmeath Libraries is delighted to partner with Westmeath County Childcare Committee in raising awareness of the My Little Library Bag initiative. In addition, we were especially delighted to have author Nina Carberry visit Mullingar Library recently and lend her support to the initiative—her encouragement reinforces the power of stories to inspire children and families alike.

📖 The free My Little Library Bag is available to pick up in any Westmeath Library. Visit www.westmeathcoco.ie/library for details of all our libraries and their opening hours

💦 Water Safety across Westmeath

🔵Ahead of the June Holiday weekend, the Irish Coast Guard, Water Safety Ireland, and the RNLI are urging people to take simple safety precautions when visiting the coast or planning activities on or near the water. This comes after two drownings last weekend at Dublin (beach) and Cork (river) involving young people.

🔵You, your family, or friends may be out enjoying the outdoors in the beautiful Lake County or visiting other water and coastal locations around the country over the June Holiday weekend. That is great…….but think about your safety when in/around the water.

🔵See the Water Safety advice below.

🔵Remember: If you see somebody in trouble on the water or along the coast, or think they are in trouble, use Marine VHF channel 16 or Dial 112 and ask for the Coast Guard.
