💦🔆 Water Safety across Westmeath during Hot Weather

Met Éireann has indicated that exceptionally warm weather is expected across Ireland this week, with high daytime temperatures, warm and humid nights, and the possibility of thunderstorms.

While the warm weather will be welcomed by many, it also brings risks that may not always be obvious or anticipated. Persons should plan ahead, keep up to date with Met Éireann forecasts and warnings, and take appropriate precautions in relation to heat, water safety, thunderstorms, and the possibility of localised flooding.

People visit water locations in high numbers during periods of warm weather. Unfortunately, this can lead to a tragedy.
Example: It is reported that 20 people drowned in France over last weekend amid a severe European heatwave. Authorities reported that the majority of these tragic accidents occurred because citizens sought relief from temperatures soaring over 40°C by swimming in unauthorised, unsupervised, or restricted bodies of water.

You, your family, or friends may be out enjoying the outdoors in the beautiful Lake County or visiting other water and coastal locations around the country over the coming days. That is great…….but think about your safety when in/around the water. See the Water Safety advice below.

Remember: If you see somebody in trouble on the water or along the coast, or think they are in trouble, use Marine VHF channel 16 or Dial 112 and ask for the Coast Guard.

🎉Huge congratulations to Sugar Plum Sweetery, proudly supported by Local Enterprise Office Westmeath, who have been crowned National Winners at the 2026 National Enterprise Awards in Dublin’s Mansion House.

🍫 The Mullingar-based premium chocolatier – founded by husband-and-wife duo David Quirke & Denise Buckley – also took home the regional title, making it a double success. Known for their creative, handmade chocolates and viral hits like the “Dubai Chocolate Bar,” Sugar Plum Sweetery has quickly become one of Ireland’s fastest-growing brands.

Shape the Future of Kinnegad: Have Your Say Today!

Westmeath County Council is undertaking this survey to assess commuting patterns and demand for enterprise units, office space and remote working facilities in Kinnegad.

The findings will inform the development of a proposed Enterprise and Co-working Hub to support local economic development.

The proposed Hub would offer high-quality workspace, business training programmes and facilities for both businesses, commuters and the wider community. This survey will assist us in preparing an application for funding and your input will help ensure that the proposed facility meets the needs of people living and working in the area.

All responses are confidential and will be used for research purposes only. For further information please contact the Local Enterprise Office on 044 933 8945.

📣Athlone Castle Visitor Centre will close to the public from Sunday, 19 October 2025, to allow for redevelopment works.

Westmeath County Council is undertaking necessary improvement works at the site as part of a redevelopment project, supported by €3.2 million in funding through Fáilte Ireland’s Regenerative Tourism and Placemaking Scheme, co-funded by the EU and the Government of Ireland under the EU Just Transition Fund.

The anticipated reopening is Autumn 2026, although this date is subject to confirmation. We will share updates throughout the project and in advance of reopening.

PART 8 PUBLIC NOTICE

Pursuant to the requirements of the above, notice is hereby given that Westmeath County Council proposes to carry out development at Blackberry Lane, Lissywollen, Athlone, Co. Westmeath.

For a period of 4 weeks the Plans and Particulars of the proposed development are available for inspection at https://consult.westmeathcoco.ie/en and they can be inspected or purchased at a fee not exceeding the reasonable cost of making a copy at the offices of Westmeath County Council at Athlone Civic Centre, Church Street, Athlone, N37 P2T5 or Áras An Chontae, Mount Street Mullingar, N91 FH4N between the hours of 9.30am to 4.00pm each day, excluding weekends & Bank Holidays from 20th June 2026 up to and including the 20th July 2026.

For a period of six weeks, beginning on 20th June 2026, submissions or observations with respect to the proposed development dealing with the proper planning and sustainable development of the area in which the development would be situated, may be made in writing to: The Administrative Officer, Planning Department, Áras an Chontae, Mullingar, Co. Westmeath, N91 FH4N or online via the Council's Consultation Portal at https://consult.westmeathcoco.ie/en.

The closing date for receipt of submissions or observations is Tuesday 4th August 2026 at 4pm.

Submissions should be labelled ‘LAA4 2026 Blackberry Lane, Lissywollen, Athlone’ and include the name, address and details of any organisation represented if relevant.

Please note - Written submissions or observations received will form part of a public statutory report to be presented to Westmeath County Council. The information contained in submissions will be available for public inspection on the Council's website and at the Council’s public counter on request. UPDATE - Water Quality Notice – Lilliput, Lough Ennell

Results from the latest water quality tests at Lilliput, Lough Ennell indicate that the water quality has returned to ‘Excellent’.

As a result, the temporary “Do Not Swim” notice has been lifted and the bathing area is open for public use.
