⚡ Don’t Take Risks With Electricity – Always Hire a Registered Electrical Contractor

Would you let just anyone rewire your home or install your electric shower?

Unregistered electrical work is dangerous and illegal. By law only Registered Electrical Contractors (RECs) are permitted to carry out restricted electrical works in your home.

✅ Certified and insured work
✅ Qualified Certifiers (QCs) in every REC
✅ Regularly inspected by Safe Electric on behalf of the CRU to ensure works are carried out safely and correctly.

📍 Always ask to see a REC registration number and check if your contractor is registered before work begins.

🏛️ An unregistered individual who carries out restricted electrical work in a domestic property may be subject to a criminal conviction, 3 years imprisonment or up to a €50,000 fine.

In colder months, many households rely more on heating systems, electric blankets, and extra appliances—which can increase the risk of electrical fires if not used safely.

✔️ Never overload sockets or extension leads
✔️ Use a Registered Electrical Contractor (REC) for any new installations or repairs
✔️ Have electrical work certified by a REC
✔️Test smoke and carbon monoxide alarms regularly

Protect your home and your family by making sure all electrical work is carried out safely and by a REC.

Happy New Year everyone, and here’s our first post of 2026:

The Commission for Regulation of Utilities (CRU) has secured a prosecution against a man in Dublin for carrying out restricted electrical works without the proper registration, leaving serious safety risks behind in a family home in Wicklow. This case highlights just how important it is to use a Safe Electric Registered Electrical Contractor (REC) for any restricted electrical work in your home.

Always ask your electrician if they are registered with Safe Electric and request a completion certificate for any work done – it’s your assurance of safety, competence and compliance with national rules.

🧾 Avoid Costly Mistakes – Get Your Certification Process Right

Every time you complete controlled electrical work, issuing the correct Completion Certificate isn’t just best practice—it’s a legal requirement under legislation.

Common mistakes RECs make:
- Incorrect or expired QC number
- Using the wrong certificate type
- Missing signatures or correct dates
- Polarity / Subsystem box not ticked
- Number of sockets, lights and fixed appliances blank (use N/A or 0)

These errors can result in:
❌ Audit non-conformances
❌ Disciplinary action
❌ Delays in inspections or registration renewals

💡 Pro Tip: Always double-check which cert applies (Cert No. 1, 2, 3 or Interim), completion certificates should only be supplied when the installation is completed. Ensure all fields are completed accurately by the Qualified Certifier.
