Hill of Tara - OPW Welcome to the official page for the Hill of Tara an OPW managed site. Attractions include an audio-visual show and guided tours of the site.

Though best known as the seat of the High Kings of Ireland, the Hill of Tara has been an important site since the late Stone Age when a passage-tomb was constructed there. Tara was at the height of its power as a political and religious centre in the early centuries after Christ.

Continuing our look at other Neolithic passage tombs visible from Hill of Tara...the impressive Great Mound Tomb 1 at Knowth lies North East of Tara, a journey as the crow flies of just under 16kms. Situated within the Brú na Bóinne UNESCO complex this is the largest passage tomb in Ireland. The photograph was taken at the southern end of the Banqueting Hall. Again located on a hilltop the burial grounds were used and reused at Knowth from approx. 3200BC📸Steven

This is The Pentecost window in St Patricks Church Hill of Tara. Painted by the celebrated artist Evie Hone it was commissioned by the Irish state in 1932 to commemorate 1500 years of the arrival of Christianity to Ireland. The scenes show the descent of the Holy Spirit on the Apostles. The visitor centre at The Hill of Tara is open until 24 September. 📸 Steven

Some photos of our incredibly successful Wild Child Day here at Hill of Tara visitor centre yesterday. All the" So you want to be an archaeologist" workshops were all fully booked and even though the rain Gods decided to visit us for the third session we had a fantastic fun filled day with hopefully lots of happy future archaeologists.
