THE LONG STONE

Where the Irishtown Cross now stands (in the centre of the roadway above the Maiden Gate site) the Long Stone was once located. It consisted of a rough pile of stones surmounted by a “long stone” and was thought to have been a Christianised pagan symbol.
An earlier cross at the site was thrown down by Cromwell. Well into the 1950’s the Irishtown was the venue for the traditional livestock fairs and the Long Stone was the spot where, according to local tradition, the farm labourers of the district attended and hired themselves out to the local farmers. The bargain as to the period of hire and wages was measured and sealed on the Long Stone.

What a wonderful view of the Quay in New Ross, set along the banks of the River Barrow, bustling with activity. One shop sign in particular stands out — it might offer valuable clues for narrowing down the date of this photo. Today, the Dunbrody Famine Ship is berthed just a little further downstream, adding another layer to the town’s rich maritime story.
