Funding has been awarded to Laois County Council for the design of barrier mitigation on the Gorragh River from Inland Fisheries Ireland.

The funding, totalling €46,340, has been awarded to support the design and development of solutions for the removal of two barriers at Ballynakill Bridge and Upper Gorragh Bridge.

The funding will facilitate key early-stage works, including feasibility studies, options assessment, and preliminary design, along with the statutory processes required to progress the project.

The Midlands' First NeuroArt Family Festival is coming to Laois this August!

Led by All Abilities Ireland, the NeuroArt Festival is a warm, creative and inclusive event for people of all ages and abilities. It’s a place where you can explore art, music, movement, sensory-friendly activities and outdoor fun - all at your own pace.

The first of its kind in the Midlands, the NeuroArt Festival takes place on Saturday 22nd August 2026 from 11am to 5pm in Old Fort Quarter, Portlaoise.

This festival celebrates neurodiversity and encourages everyone to take part in ways that feel comfortable for them. Some activities are calm and sensory-friendly, while others are lively, playful or hands-on.

There will also be community talks, creative workshops, quiet zones, social spaces and opportunities to learn, connect and feel supported.

Members of the Laois County Council Enterprise, Economic Development and Tourism Strategic Policy Committee (SPC) visited CJ Sheeran’s facility on the Limerick Road, Mountrath recently.

The visit was hosted by CJ Sheeran, one of Ireland’s leading manufacturers and recyclers of timber packaging and pallets. The company, headquartered in Mountrath, has grown significantly since its establishment in 1994 and now operates multiple sites across Ireland, employing over 300 people and supporting a wide network of industries including food and beverage, pharmaceuticals, medical devices and engineering.

The visit provided an opportunity for constructive discussion on key areas including sustainability, the circular economy, local employment, skills development and apprenticeship opportunities.

Laois County Council extends its thanks to the management and team at CJ Sheeran for hosting the visit, and to Cllr. James Kelly, Chair of the SPC, for facilitating the engagement.
