Yesterday's announcement of a 'latte levy' in Ireland is very disappointing news. We should be incentivising retailers to use truly recyclable products like Butterfly Cup. This policy also seems to ignore the cold drinks industry, which has the same environmental issues.

The Irish government wants to promote the use of keep cups, but research has found the average person is not using their reusable cup enough times before forgetting about it or throwing it away.

A reusable cup needs to be used over 50 times in order to have a lower carbon footprint than even an existing mainstream disposable cup – and a true recyclable plastic-free cup like Butterfly Cup will be multitudes more than that.

ButterflyCup CEO Tommy McLoughlin was quoted in The Times today, responding to the Irish government's plans to levy all disposable coffee cups – including environmentally friendly compostable cups.

By making these changes, the Irish govt is missing a golden opportunity to incentivise retailers to use truly recyclable products.
