Lough Funshinagh

Lough Funshinagh The Vanishing Lake in Roscommon Ireland.

A turlough or disappearing lake which has changed into a lake which instead of periodically disappearing is now flooding not only land and sheds but homes of residents who once lived far from the shore

Old Lough Funshinagh is no longer confined
Its expansion perplexes my soul and mind
Before it always emptied when it was primed
But the shore we all knew is freshly designed
Now we know the effect of far too much rain
Can have on a turlough with no open drain
If there is a tunnel as has been alleged
Some stone must have settled and is wedged
By the hour and day it keeps on expanding
And there is no end to farmer's demanding
This didn't happen overnight it has been years
And long hours have worn out many volunteers
The land that's flooded you can no longer plow
The shed that is flooded cannot house the cow
They say that pigs can't fly neither can they swim
For the turkeys and rooster things look so grim
Where there was grass now has the nest of a swan
Underneath the nest pike are starting to spawn
With walls and ditches homes can't be protected
To base common sense some are not connected
There is rotting hay in the galvanized shed
Lyon's daughter's family has already fled
The answer is a canal to find a flow
To the Shannon River just six miles below
This problem has been visible since fifteen
Solutions are years away now that's obscene

The waves started near Ardmullen like a distant ridge
Broke and rose once again in perpetual motion
No longer islands to tame them there is much erosion
On and on they came to finally crash at Scally bridge

All the Beattie families must live in constant fear
That swans ducks and pike will soon be sharing their abode
When the filled sandbags can no longer save Ballagh road
And all wish the dissapearing lake would dissapear

Water water everywhere when will it stop cresting
Never before has the water been so deep or high
And it has been twenty five years since the lake went dry
The islands have dissapeared no place for birds nesting

The flooding caused relocation of cattle and pigs
This was not caused by a few storms but rain repeated
Made worse by a solution that was not completed
Stopped by wealty busybodies beter knows as prigs

Progress report sought on changes to Lough Funshinagh laws
This week I will question the Minister for Housing, Darragh O’Brien TD in the Dáil on the steps which are being taken to review the laws which impact on the flood relief works at Lough Funshinagh.
Last month Minister Patrick O’Donovan told me that he has passed on the correspondence from Roscommon County Council to Minister O’Brien as the concerns raised in the Council letter are matters for the Department of Housing, Local Government and Heritage.
I now want an update from Minister O’Brien on what steps he is taking on foot of this letter to review the current laws which are blocking the completion of flood relief works at Lough Funshinagh.
This is not only important to address the plight of the families in the vicinity of Lough Funshinagh, but if the current legal situation is not addressed then this very same issue will be faced by many other families across the country in the near future.
Last week, I also had the opportunity to raise the present humanitarian crisis faced by the eight families in Ballagh and Lisphelim in the Dáil with Minister Michael McGrath who was responding on behalf of the Taoiseach, and there is no doubt that he is fully aware of the situation on the ground.

Help Mammy Beattie
As a family we are beyond grateful to so many people & friends for the support our family has got in particular the last 2 years that have been beyond comprehension of sadness. For this reason mammy Beattie now just wants to be left at peace in her home. Memories let them be good or bad, inside those walls, are her memories, that she has had for nearly 50yrs that she does not want too leave behind. Only one example Síle Ní Bhiataí bridesmaid dress, the month before she got sick, is still hanging in the same spot she left it in her bedroom, everything untouched.
Unfortunately we need to call upon ye all again and hopefully this is for the very last time. Our family needs public support this Monday 4th July at 7pm in Lecarrow. If you are from the top of Donegal to the bottom Kerry it doesn’t matter please come out to show us support. If we can be seen to have the public backing it might just be the trick needed to solve the Lough Funshinagh Flood Crisis. Many an issue has been overturned with the power of the people.
It’s not just about now save mammy Beatties home it’s save mammy beattie. She has been through too much already and this is the final straw for her as she states “I’m as well go to the cemetery & be with Sile, Frank & Georgina if I loose my home”. We can buy her bricks & water no problem but she just wants to be in her home. Nobody can recreate a home.
Last week with the heavy rain she got up at 2am in the month of June to dip the pumps and see had they diesel afraid that they needed to be turned on while everyone else is soundly sleeping. No one should have to live in fear like this.
So if you have a spare hour come out and let’s show the council & the government that people do matter and this community is not going down without a fight.
Sinéad & all the Beatties x
