AN INDIGO HAZE
Bluebell season has arrived, with a soft carpet of blue under our ancient trees.
Bluebells play an important role in woodland ecosystems. Their dense growth helps support the soil and encourage healthy woodland floors.
Woodland plants such as bluebells and wild garlic have also evolved strategies to grow quickly in early spring. Bluebells store energy underground as bulbs during winter, then surge into growth as days lengthen after the spring equinox. Their bell-shaped flowers provide an important early source of nectar for newly awakened bumblebee queens.

CONSERVATION
Restoring a heritage stone wall requires patience, skill and respect for the history in front of you. The slow rhythm of applying lime mortar (made by mixing sand, lime and water) an understanding of how the stone will fit together and sometimes splitting large stone with a chisel and a hammer.
A section of our 17th century orchard wall collapsed in recent years & we have finally had it repaired. The walls would have enclosed a kitchen garden and glass house producing fruit and vegetables for the original house on the Estate. These walls (some parts are made with brick) would not only have provided shelter for the vegetation from harsh winds but also acted as a thermal mass absorbing heat from the sun during the day and releasing it slowly at night. They created a microclimate warming more quickly in spring and cooling more slowly in the fall helping in temperature regulation & extending the growing season.
By conserving the walls we preserve the story, history and connection to the land of our ancestors.

While annual restoration of the structural bones of Clonalis is always a priority, painting is also a part of that process. Since returning home, we have painted over 20 rooms alongside the annual cottage maintenance—a huge undertaking. A bucket load of paint & patience is always key.
There are always two sides to the Clonalis story, one underpinned by the people who work here. Michael has helped care for Clonalis for over 40 years.
