A fantastic weekend for Roscommon Town and the wider local economy as thousands of supporters travelled to King & Moffatt Dr Hyde Park for Roscommon v Tyrone.

While the result was not the one Roscommon supporters were hoping for, the occasion once again showed the major value of big match days for local businesses, hospitality, accommodation, suppliers and the town as a whole.

Roscommon Chamber President Cahal Mahon said the impact of these fixtures is clear, with visiting supporters in town across the weekend and strong support from Roscommon fans helping to create a real boost locally.

Well done to all businesses, volunteers, match organisers, supporters and everyone who helped showcase Roscommon Town at its best.

‘Roscommon GAA is on a high at the moment, fans are coming in big numbers. It was notable that nearly every supporter had a Roscommon jersey!’ – Cahal Mahon   ‘Chris O’Dowd called in to us after the game. And he was so positive about Roscommon Town, and indeed the Hyde. And that same mess...

Ecole Primaire Les Tilleuls, Chartrettes in France has partnered up with Kilteevan National School on a penpal project. The letter writing exchange project is part of the Roscommon-Chartrettes twinning programme which began between the pupils of the two schools in the Spring of last year with the help of Kilteevan’s teachers, Ms Michelle Whyte and the then principal, Ms Colette Brennan. The project continues with the assistance of Ms Orla Slyman and the current principal Ms Susan O’Connor and above all with the enthusiasm of all the pupils who are fully engaged with it. Noel Connolly Chairperson of the Twinning Programme outlines that ‘’The penpal project gives senior classes in Kilteevan an opportunity to learn and use the French language, and it fits well into the Department of Education’s initiative for foreign languages in primary schools ‘’Say Yes to Languages’’. Other schools in the Roscommon region have also chosen French as their foreign language and plans are afoot to widen out the penpal project to other Roscommon schools.

Roscommon Chartrettes Twinning, now in its 28th Year, is extending an open invitation to parents/families from the Roscommon region to visit Chartrettes from Friday 26th - Monday 29th June. It is a real opportunity to learn or improve French language skills by staying with a French family and experiencing the cultural life of a French community.

Music, song and dance are also very much part of this cultural exchange. The main cost of this adventure are flights. Marie Mitchell the Twinning Secretary points out that "the uniqueness of the twinning is the host family experience which also makes the trip very affordable". The trip includes a day out in Paris which is near Chartrettes and is always a highlight of the visit. As part of the twinning project your French host family will visit you the following year.

Roscommon-Chartrettes Twinning is supported by Roscommon County Council & Chartretttes Municipal Authority.

If you feel you would like more information about this intercultural experience please contact as soon as possible our Secretary, Marie Mitchell at [email protected] or 0863859274 or our Chairperson, Noel Connolly 0876388590.
