Local Government and the right of local self-government is a cornerstone of any modern democracy. Irish Local Authorities are the closest and most accessible form of Government to people in their local community. They also have responsibility for delivery of a wide range of services in their local area with a focus on making towns and cities attractive places to live, work and invest. Sligo County

Council services include Housing; Planning; Roads; Water supply; Environmental Protection; Provision of Recreation and Amenities and Community Infrastructure. Sligo County Council also plays a key role in supporting community development, economic development and enterprise at a local level. Sligo County Councils support on the ground is critical to the success of many initiatives which drive local communities. These range from local festivals and events; design of streetscapes and village renewal schemes; support for micro-enterprises, business parks and incubation units; involvement in energy efficiency projects; promotion of rural broadband; planning for major investments in the green economy.

Chun cabhrú leis an bpróiseas seo, tá Comhairle Contae Shligigh ag iarraidh ar dhaoine a shnámhann ar thránna agus lochanna a insint dóibh má cheapann siad gur cheart dóibh sonrúcháin ainmnithe uiscí snámha atá ann cheana a choinneáil nó ainmniú oifigiúil nua limistéar snámha a thabhairt do limistéir a úsáidtear go coitianta le haghaidh snámha, ach nach bhfuil aitheanta faoi láthair.

Tá an teimpléad atá de dhith chun d’aighneacht a dhéanamh le fáil sa doiciméid seo. https://ow.ly/VYhZ50Z37lK

Local authorities must identify official bathing areas in their area every year so that they can be monitored for safety, water quality and their level of use.

To help with this process, Sligo County Council are asking people who swim at beaches and lakes to tell them if they think they should maintain existing designated bathing waters designations or give a new official bathing area designation to areas that are commonly used for swimming but not identified at the present time.

The following document includes the template required to make your submission: https://ow.ly/9giq50Z37kL

The closing date for submissions to Sligo County Council is 26th September 2026.

🚫 Beware of Unauthorised Waste Collectors / “Man in a Van” 🚚

If someone offers to take your waste cheaply, there is a real risk it will be illegally dumped — in a bog, field, roadside, or scenic area.
If waste linked to you is found in an illegal dump, you could face a fine of up to €5,000 or 12 months imprisonment.

👉 You, as the waste holder, are legally responsible for ensuring your waste is given only to an authorised collector.

Before handing over waste, always ask to see their Waste Collection Permit. It must show:
✔️ Collector’s name & address
✔️ Waste Collection Permit Number

Check authorised collectors on the NWCPO website: www.nwcpo.ie
If they’re not on the list, they’re not authorised.

♻️ Better options:
• Bulky items: Bring to your local Recycling Centre
• WEEE, clothes, paper, plastic bottles, packaging & glass: Recycled FREE

If they’re not on the list, they’re not legit.
