Local Government and the right of local self-government is a cornerstone of any modern democracy. Irish Local Authorities are the closest and most accessible form of Government to people in their local community. They also have responsibility for delivery of a wide range of services in their local area with a focus on making towns and cities attractive places to live, work and invest. Sligo County

Council services include Housing; Planning; Roads; Water supply; Environmental Protection; Provision of Recreation and Amenities and Community Infrastructure. Sligo County Council also plays a key role in supporting community development, economic development and enterprise at a local level. Sligo County Councils support on the ground is critical to the success of many initiatives which drive local communities. These range from local festivals and events; design of streetscapes and village renewal schemes; support for micro-enterprises, business parks and incubation units; involvement in energy efficiency projects; promotion of rural broadband; planning for major investments in the green economy.

Cathaoirleach of Sligo County Council, Cllr Dara Mulvey has welcomed the recent announcements regarding the Sligo Greenway project and the positive progress being made towards its delivery.

The proposed Greenway represents a significant opportunity for County Sligo and has the potential to deliver lasting recreational, tourism, health and economic benefits for local communities and visitors alike. Importantly, the proposed arrangement will ensure that the railway corridor remains in public ownership and protected for any future rail requirements.

The Council remains fully committed to the development of a high-quality Greenway between Collooney and Bellaghy, in line with the preferred option identified following the comprehensive Option Selection Process. This project has the potential to become a transformative piece of infrastructure for the county, enhancing connectivity, supporting local businesses and promoting sustainable travel and recreation.

We look forward to continued engagement with Iarnród Éireann and Transport Infrastructure Ireland as the project progresses. Following completion of the Option Selection Phase, the Council intends to advance the scheme through detailed design, environmental assessment and the statutory planning process.

We would like to acknowledge the significant support shown for the project by local communities, elected members and stakeholders across the county and look forward to seeing the next phase of the Greenway's development progress.
