Still round the corner there may wait
A new road or a secret gate;
And though I oft have passed them by,
A day will come at last when I
Shall take the hidden paths that run
West of the Moon,
East of the Sun.

Tolkien, who died on this day in 1973

Those pale pink stars with hearts of gold

Tell me not here, it needs not saying
What tune the enchantress plays
In aftermaths of soft September
On russet floors, by waters idle
The pine lets fall its cone
And traveller’s joy beguiles in autumn
Hearts that have lost their own
