The annual Garda Memorial Day, honouring the 90 members of An Garda Síochána who lost their lives in the line of duty while serving the State, took place in Dubh Linn Gardens on Saturday, 16 May 2026.
Among those remembered was Garda John Murrin.
On 6 May 1924, Garda Murrin and Sergeant Thomas Griffin were investigating a shooting from the previous day. Having identified the suspects, the two officers went to a house in Killonerry, Co. Kilkenny. On arrival, and without warning, both were shot and seriously wounded. Sergeant Griffin died the following day, 7 May 1924. Garda Murrin succumbed to his injuries on 19 October 1924.
One of Garda Murrin’s descendants is now following in his footsteps. Trainee Garda Jack Behan, a member of Intake 262 currently at the Garda College, has said that reading about his late relative’s sacrifice was the main reason he decided to join An Garda Síochána.
